  2. Mortifying the Flesh, Part 3Colossians 3:9-11 Colossians 1:1-11 The Foundation - vs. 1-4: We have been raised up with Christ - seek & set your mind on things above We are secure in Christ and will be glorified with Him when He returns

  3. Mortifying the Flesh, Part 3Review “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth.” - vs. 5 Put them to death Actions of sexual sin arise out of shameful living, uncontrolled emotions, sinful desires & selfish greed Prior to salvation all Christians were also controlled by sin, but that is to no longer be true

  4. Mortifying the Flesh, Part 3Review Paul’s list in verses 8-9 progress from sinful motivations to the specific sinful actions they produce Anger & wrath are states of being upset over circumstances - anger burns, wrath explodes Anger & wrath are corrected by dealing with the causes quickly and walking in righteousness

  5. Mortifying the Flesh, Part 3Review Malice harbors evil intent for others Corrected by seeking good for others Blasphemy seeks to cause injury to another’s good name Corrected by treating others with kindness

  6. Mortifying the Flesh, Part 3Review Abusive speech is vile expression of thoughts & emotions – Corrected by silence & changed attitude Lying is telling falsehoods – Corrected by being humble and speaking the truth in love

  7. Mortifying the Flesh, Part 3Colossians 3:9-10 All of these are corrected by laying aside the old man and putting on the new man - vs. 9-10

  8. Old Man vs. New Man Colossians 3:9-10 Lay aside ajpekduvomai / apekduomai - strip off, like a garment Put on - ejnduvw / enduô - put on as in getting clothed with Spiritual schizophrenic? Is the new added to the old man or does he replace the old man?

  9. Old Man vs. New Man Colossians 3:9-10 Perfectionism - Can man become sinless in this life? No - 1 John 1:8-10 Romans 8:23 Old Man - Unredeemed flesh, worldly desires, sinful thinking - the unregenerate self

  10. Old Man vs. New Man Colossians 3:9-10 New Man - the regenerated self - the immaterial aspect that is made alive to God for eternity The new man desires good while groaning against this world & longs for final redemption (Romans 7 & 8)

  11. The Relationship of the old man and the new man 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Romans 6:6 - Colossians 3:3 - Galatians 2:20 Laying aside (Colossians 3:9) / putting off (Ephesians 4:22) are viewed as one time events

  12. Why Christians sin The old man is dead, but the new man is embodied in the same body that the old man was in. We still have the old flesh, old mind, old thoughts, old desires, old pressures, old temptations

  13. Why Christians sin Sin is overcome by walking by the spirit (Gal. 5:16) & being transformed (Rom. 12:2) Romans 6 - the old self was crucified with Christ, you have died to sin, it is no longer your master The slave who is freed must learn to live according to his new position and identity

  14. Living in Righteousness Walk in your identity as a new man to obey your new master If the old man were still alive, you would have two competing masters. The Christian is not to lie because the old man is laid aside and the new man is put on

  15. Being Renewed Colossians 3:10 - ajnakainovw / anakainoô - caused to grow, be changed into something new Growth and change occur by an increasing knowledge of God & His will - conforming us to Christ

  16. Being Renewed Colossians 3:10 The knowledge of God comes through His word (2 Tim. 3:16-17) which transforms our minds (Rom. 12:2) God will conform us to the image of Christ - Romans 8:29; Philippians 1:6; 1 John 3:2

  17. Without Prejudice Colossians 3:11 Christian love for one another is to be without prejudice of any kind Jew & Greek - Ethnic barriers removed. All groups tend to be ethnocentric and prejudiced against those not like themselves Acts 10 records the gospel breaking of the barrier between Jew and Gentile

  18. Without Prejudice Colossians 3:11 Circumcised and uncircumcised - barriers of non-essential religious practices removed Acts 15 - the Jerusalem Council. If fundamental doctrines agree, there should be no further division

  19. Without Prejudice Colossians 3:11 Barbarian and Sycthian - barriers of education and culture removed Slave and freeman - barriers of social standing removed Philemon & Onesiums are the example of the gospel breaking this barrier

  20. Conclusions There is no justification for churches to be divided for any of these reasons If our identity is in Jesus Christ, no other category of identification is of importance – 1 Corinthians 12:13

  21. Conclusions Let us show we have died & been raised up with Christ walking in newness of life & being renewed to be like Jesus
