Books as a Source of Stories • Picture Books=single words or simple sentences and plots • Storybooks=More words, complex plots, fewer pictures • Family Life Stories-problems are resolved to teach social understanding • Animal Stories-animals have human qualities and special abilities • Fairy Tales-characters succeed, good wins

Selecting Books for Children • Familiar people, places, and things attract the attention of children • Until 5-years, children cannot distinguish between fact and fiction • Pictures should tell the story standing alone • Only a few new words should be introduced in a story • Attention Span: 3-yr-olds~ 6-10 mins., • 4-yr-olds~8-12 mins. • Promote positive messages!

  6. Reading Stories to Children • Read ahead of time • Comfortable environment • Small groups • Help children settle down for story time • Introduce with ?s, comments, and predictions • Props grab attention • Use normal voice, but add sound effects, pauses, and new voices for interest • Answer ?s as they arise • Make the ending apparent

  7. Achieving Variety in Storytelling • Draw and Tell: drawings are made on the chalkboard as story is told • Tapes: audio or video • Puppets: use as a “listener” who comes up w/?s • Group Stories: have children recount an event by making a story together • Flipcharts=stories drawn on tagboard cards • Slide Stories: center on pictures taken during an event • Flannel Boards=using characters and props cut out of felt

  8. Displaying Books • Covers arranged to be seen • Library area away from traffic, separated w/dividers • Keep favorites, but rotate others for variety • Address issues children are facing (divorce, illness, death, etc.) • Books lie flat
