  1. GE Measurement & Control Translating Laboratory POD to Field POD via Digitized Workflow Authoring for Portable NDT Devices Robert Ward & Brad Gilliland GE Measurement & Control Solutions Inspection Technologies A4A NDT Forum Sept. 24, 2013

  2. PANI 3 • “Programme for the Assessment of NDT in Industry”- 2008 • Human factors study • Ability tests, Personality tests and manual UT tests on samples measuring ability to detect and size defects • Correlate abilities and personalities to UT test outcomes

  3. Personality Traits

  4. UT tests • Technicians were given set of test blocks, very specific instructions and procedures, and asked to detect, locate and size defects. The results were measured by: • Flaw omission frequency • Average defect position error • Average defect size errors • False positives

  5. 5 Variables • Five variables had significant correlation to the UT test scores • Mechanical Comprehension • Sociability • Cautiousness • Original Thinking • Years of manual ultrasound experience

  6. Observations Inspectors were video taped doing the inspection and again when they were interviewed on how they might perform better. First findings for improving results based on analysis of video recordings: • Better training on geometry of the test samples and implications for ultrasound • Operators using a systematic application of the procedure performed much better Operator suggestions • Environmental, or perceived environmental conditions relieved so that inspector concentrates on data collection and analysis • Better and more clearly written documentation including procedures and reporting

  7. “It would be really nice to have the UT standard procedures displayed on instruments.” – Edwin, SGS

  8. US Labor Statistics 40% of NDT technicians are > 56 years old 3% are < 24 years old Transfer of domain knowledge How we learn Make it familiar Facilitate the Transfer of Knowledge

  9. Our Solution: Mentor Create • Simple to use authoring program • Translate NDT procedure into digital workflow • Include photo, video, URL links, other graphics • Simple Goals • POD • Productivity • Capture Domain Expertise Procedure Documentation Calibration + Inspection Instruction Report, Analyze + Archive NDT Applications

  10. Simple to Build an Interactive Procedure on Computer

  11. Deployed to Device

  12. Next Steps • Work with partner and beta customers to translate paper based procedures, trainings and instructions into on-device applications • Evaluate the effectiveness of scripted workflow procedures on POD in several categories: • Training new technicians in technology • Training new and experienced technicians in a new inspection • In manufacturing environment • In field services environment
