  1. Mrs. Jolly7th Grade English/Language Arts

  2. Supplies you need EVERY day…. • At least 2 WORKING pencils • An eraser • Your ELA notebook • Your ELA binder • A yellow highlighter • An ink pen • A book to read for independent reading • YOUR BRAIN • It is your responsibility to have all these supplies with you and ready to use when the tardy bell rings. Ask me for something that you need when you enter class….don’t just sit there without it.

  3. Classroom mission statement Open your notebook up. Take 6 minutes to write YOUR answers to the following 4 questions. Why are we here? What must we be able to do well TOGETHER while we are here? How will we know that we’ve been successful? Our classroom should be ______________ every day.

  4. Mission continued… Now turn to the people in your group. Share your answers to the questions. If you agree with an answer that you didn’t think of, add it to your list. Report out to the whole class.

  5. Guidelines or rules Now that we’ve decided on what our classroom mission statement will be about, we need to decide on the guidelines, rules, or norms that we will ALL follow in order to make sure that we live up to our mission statement. Turn to the next page in your notebook. Make a T-Chart. The left side should be called “What students are doing” and the right side should be called “What the teacher is doing” What students are doing What the teacher is doing

  6. Write your ideas in the T-Chart. Share your ideas with your table. Share out ideas with the class.

  7. Class rules that are nonnegotiable!! • No backpacks or large purses in class. If a book or notebook can fit inside it, it’s not a purse. These MUST stay in your locker. • No food, drinks or gum in class. The ONLY exception to this rule is if you get candy from me as a reward. If I give you candy for something it MUST be eaten in this classroom. • Tardy means that you aren’t in your seat when the tardy bell rings. 3 tardysTOTAL means you will get assigned ASD.

  8. Class rules that are nonnegotiable!! • Follow directions the first time they are given. I will only give you a warning ONCE…not once a day. You will be assigned silent lunch and/or ASD for not listening. • Follow all school rules at all times. • Now look at your T-chart. What other classroom rules do we need in place to ensure that every has a safe environment where MAXIMUM learning can happen?

  9. Classroom procedures Supplies….as soon as you walk into class make sure you have all of the materials for class. If you forgot something ASK me at the BEGINNING of class. I will loan you a pencil or a highlighter. I will give you some paper. If you wait until class has started to ask for supplies you will be given silent lunch. Turning in assignments…use the blue stacked bins on the top of the book shelf. Anything that you need to turn into me will need to go in the bin for your class period. Grading….45%=classwork, 45%=tests/quizzes, 10%= homework

  10. Classroom procedures AR…each quarter you need to earn at least 10 AR points. Every night for homework you should read for 45 minutes from your library book. I will schedule time every 2 weeks for our class to go to the library to check out books. You will have access to the classroom computers to take AR tests. Earning 10 AR points will equal a 100 test grade. Earning less than 10 will result in a 60 as a test grade. ELA Blog…. Each week I will post articles and/or videos for you to read or watch. You must comment on a blog posting each week. You can comment on the blog itself or comment on another students comments. ALL comments must be appropriate and positive. You will receive a weekly homework grade for commenting on the blog. This will be 9 grades each grading period. You will have computer access at school for this assignment. http://iss.schoolwires.com//Domain/2460

  11. Classroom procedures Weekly vocabulary words….each week you will have 10 vocab words. 6 of them will have common prefixes, roots, and suffixes. 4 of them will be vocabulary words that you should know for reading and writing. You will make a foldable each week for your words. Everyday we will begin class by reviewing the words in some way. Tests will be on Friday (or the last day of the school week). Vocab lists will be posted on the classroom webpage. Write to Learn…as a 7th grader you will have to take a state writing test. We will be using Write to Learn as our writing program. You will have a username and password so you will be able to work on the things you write at home as well. We will use the computer lab weekly for Write to Learn. What questions do you have about Classroom procedures?

  12. Getting to know you…. Materials you will need: 1 bag Skittles 1 piece of paper…can be loose or in a notebook 1 pencil Directions for Skittles: Open your packet and count the total number of Skittles in your bag. Number your piece of paper to the number of Skittles you have. For example, if there are 12 Skittles in your bag you would number 1-12. Sort your Skittles by color.

  13. Use the following key to write statements about yourself: Orange= fun things about your summer break Red= great vacation/trip Green= something about your family Blue= favorite hobby Yellow= what you miss about summer break Other= interesting things you want us to know about you For example: if I have 4 orange Skittles then on 1-4 I have to write 4 statements about funny memories from summer. If I have 6 red Skittles the on 5-10 I have to write statements about vacations or trips that I’ve been on.
