  2. Purpose of Self-Inspections To reinforce and promote safe conditions and operations in the workplace. To monitor individual performance in safety, reward good behavior and address poor behavior. To monitor general safety compliance in the workplace so that future safety efforts focus on our deficiencies as a system and/or corporation.

  4. Types of Safety Inspections • Facility: Office, warehouse, public areas & building exterior • Vehicle & Equipment: Company vehicles and field equipment • Field-Jobsite: In general and at jobsites • Road Observation: vehicle operation • Audits: Management performance

  5. Role of Safety Inspections • “To uncover, address and change unsafe acts and conditions before the accident occurs.” • Solutions must be long term, not quick fixes.

  6. Facility Inspection Vehicle-Equipment Field-Jobsite Road Observation Monthly Weekly by driver and quarterly management audit One per quarterly for each field employee One per quarter for each field employee Frequency of Inspections

  7. Focused Inspections

  8. New Employee Management to conduct one jobsite, vehicle-equipment and road observation report in the first 30 days

  9. Problem Employee Management to conduct a follow-up inspection within 30 days following a below average inspection.

  10. Accident Issue(s) Increased inspections should be conducted which monitor and target emerging safety issues. This type of safety inspection should also address any accident trending concerns.

  11. Jobsite/Road Observation/Vehicle and Equipment Inspections These primary safety inspections are intended for managers to monitor and measure safety as an operational concern in their departments.

  12. Facility Inspections • Because these surveys impact more than one department, a facility inspection team should conduct this inspection • The team should be composed of people from many different departments.

  13. New Employees Emerging Safety Issues Problem Employees These surveys need to be done by a person or a team, which best fits the need or reason for the survey. Follow-up is very important in these types of surveys. Focused Inspections

  14. Management Audits Are done to quality check safety inspections and measure management safety performance at the system. These audits may be conducted by, or at the request of: 1: System Management 2: Corporate Safety - Risk Management 3: Insurance Carrier - Broker - Consultant

  15. Safety Recommendations • Clearly states the problem and the solution • States who is responsible for implementing the recommendation • Establishes a timeframe with periodic follow-ups
