  2. 3 Types of Love • Eros- Is a love that is more of a physical attraction to one another. • Philia- the love that you share with your best friend and the people that you enjoy being with • Agape-unconditional love for someone. Like parents to children. Or people in a marriage. http://www.sjchurchofchrist.org/agape.shtml

  3. Great Gatsby • He nodded sagely. "And what’s more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time.“ • Their eyes met, and they stared together at each other, alone in space. With an effort she glanced down at the table."You always look so cool," she repeated. She had told him that she loved him, and Tom Buchanan saw. He was astounded. His mouth opened a little, and he looked at Gatsby, and then back at Daisy as if he had just recognized her as some one he knew a long time ago. • "They’re a rotten crowd," I shouted across the lawn. You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together." I’ve always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him, because I disapproved of him from beginning to end. • [Jordan’s] gray, sun-strained eyes stared straight ahead, but she had deliberately shifted our relations, and for a moment I thought I loved her. But I am slow-thinking and full of interior rules that act as brakes on my desires, and I knew that first I had to get myself definitely out of that tangle back home. I’d been writing letters once a week and signing them: "Love, Nick," and all I could think of was how, when that certain girl played tennis, a faint mustache of perspiration appeared on her upper lip. Nevertheless there was a vague understanding that had to be tactfully broken off before I was free.

  4. Gatsby Questions • What kind of love do you think each character has? • Is Gatsby truly in love with Daisy? Or is he just trying to prove himself? • Do you think any of the relationships are good strong relationships?

  5. Anna Karenina • "And how I loved him! my God, how I loved him!.... How I loved him! And now don't I love him? Don't I love him more than before? The most horrible thing is," she began, but did not finish her thought, because MatronaPhilimonovna put her head in at the door. • But Levin was in love, and so it seemed to him that Kitty was so perfect in every respect that she was a creature far above everything earthly; and that he was a creature so low and so earthly that it could not even be conceived that other people and she herself could regard him as worthy of her. • He felt that the love that bound him to Anna was not a momentary impulse, which would pass, as worldly intrigues do pass, leaving no other traces in the life of either but pleasant or unpleasant memories. He felt all the torture of his own and her position, all the difficulty there was for them, conspicuous as they were in the eye of all the world, in concealing their love, in lying and deceiving; and in lying, deceiving, feigning, and continually thinking of others, when the passion that united them was so intense that they were both oblivious of everything else but their love.

  6. Anna Karenina Questions • What kind of love do you think each character has? • Do you think Dolly is really in love with her husband? Is Karenin in love with Anna? • Do you think any of the relationships are ones that you would want to be in?

  7. Kitchen • His smile was so bright as he stood in my doorway that I zoomed in for a close-up on his pupils. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. • when I’ve fallen in love before, I've always tried to run it down and tackle it, but with him it would be different. The conversation was like a glimpse of stars in a cloudy sky- perhaps over time this would lead to love. • If Yuichi is with me I need nothing else. It flashed for only an instant, but it left me confused, dazzled. • Then it hit me they’re in love. Of course no doubt about it your in love. • I yearn to see her again. She too is a very precious child of mine.

  8. Kitchen Questions • What kind of love do you think each character has? • How did the other characters help Mikage realize she loved Yuichi? • Do you think that Mikage was truly a part of Erikos family? • Why do you think it took so long for Mikage and Yuichi to fall in love? • Do you think of their relationship as strange?

  9. Together • Of all of the relationships do you think any of them are truly in love? If yes why? • Do you think these relationships relate to real life? If so which ones? • Do you think any of the relationships have parallels? If so which ones? • Do any of the relationships have any of the same aspects? If so which ones?
