  1. Tracking at risk students (Edulink as useful tool) Najma Agherdien Email:najmaa@uj.ac.za

  2. General perception Do you agree/disagree? Motivate! Lecture attendance is largely a student issue & responsibility – there’s little that lecturers can do…

  3. Possible reasons for non-attendance Lecturer’s ability to engage and entertain students Quality/clarity lecture availability of notes online – see as substitute to lectures, not complement conflicting deadlines for other classes use of relevant examples Clay, T. and Breslow, L. (2006) "Why Students Don't Attend Class", MIT Faculty Newsletter, XVIII(4) [online - http://web.mit.edu/fnl/volume/184/breslow.html]

  4. And last but not least…… Lack of sleep…….

  5. Strategies to encourage attendance… • Let students submit: • class notes, • written questions • brief handwritten summaries at end of lecture • Create a collaborative, interactive environment : • Q&A sessions • buzz group discussions • help students to connect the dots

  6. NB! Overloading students with info, leaving them no time to think about, integrate & work with the content, is not an effective way of teaching Our LMS: Edulink

  7. Tracking tool: a way to identify if students are engaging with the online environment/Edulink

  8. Benefits of the Tracking Tool • Early warning detection – identify “at risk” students” • Increase student throughput • ?????

  9. How to monitor attendance… Attendance registers in Excel –easily import/export using Grade book tool (how do you feel about this????) Set up group in Edulink (make everyone a member) Chronic non-attendance = remove from list Selectively release notes Inform students via pop-up announcement/ learner guide Click here!!! Please note that attendance will be monitored in every lecture session on this module, and that the facility to download notes from Edulink will be withdrawn from students whose attendance is unsatisfactory.

  10. Edulink engagement: not just “one more thing” to do...

  11. Select type, then date & Run

  12. Example of report

  13. Example of “student tracking” report - exported
