  1. C C Showing Relations between Two Sets in The Cartesian Coordinate System In addition to use arrow diagrams, we can also use a Cartesian coordinate to show a relation between two sets. The Cartesian coordinate system consists of two axis, the horizontal axis and the vertical one. As an example, let A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and B = {1, 2, 3, 4}. Suppose the relation between the set A and the set B is shown in the following diagram:

  2. The Cartesian coordinates representing this relation are as follows. (Write the numbers in x-axis and y-axis) The coordinate (1,2), for example, shows that 1 is related to 2. Can you explain the meaning of the other coordinates?

  3. Problem 3 Let P = {-1, 0, 1, 2, 3} and Q = {-2, 0, 1, 2}. Make three different relations between sets P and Q, and then express the relations using the Cartesian coordinate system.

  4. D Expressing Relations between Two Sets Using a Set of Ordered Pairs A relation between two sets A and B can also be represented in the form of a set of ordered pairs. A set of ordered pairs of a relation between set A and set B is represented by {(x, y)} where x is a member of set A, and y is a member of set B.

  5. As an example, let us reconsider the relation “likes to play” in Figure 2.1. This relation can be expressed as a set R of ordered pairs as follows: R = {(Riska, swimming), (Riska, badminton), (Dimas, football), (Candra, football), (Dira, badminton), (Dira, basketball), (Reni, badminton), (Reni, basketball)}.

  6. Example The following is another example. Given P = {2, 3, 4, 5} and Q = {4, 9, 25}. Relation R between the members of the set P and those of the set Q is a factor of. This relation can be expressed in a set of ordered pairs as follows: R = {(2, 4) , (3, 9) , (4, 4) , (5, 25)}.

  7. Conclusion : A relationfrom a set A to a set Bcan expressed asa set of ordered pairs t “{(x, y)}” wherex is the member of the set A(the first set)and y is the member of the set B (the second set).

  8. TASK 2.1 Given arrow diagrams below. What is the relation between each pair of sets? a. b.

  9. Draw an arrow diagram from the set K and the set L below showing the relation of “three times of” . • K = {9, 12, 15, 21} and L = {3, 4, 5, 7} • Given six students of grade VIII SMP Palangkaraya, namely Dina, Alfa, Sita, Bima, Doni, and Rudi. They have different shoe sizes. Dina and Sita have the same shoe size, 38. Alfa’s shoe size is 37. Bima has the shoe size of 40, while Doni and Rudi has the same one, 39. • Draw an arrow diagram showing the relation between the students of grade VIII SMP Palangkaraya and their shoe sizes. • Write down all the ordered pairs expressing the relationship above.
