Expedition • From 1540 to 1542 Francisco Vasquez de Coronado led an expedition to find the legendary seven cities of Cibola • He wanted to find these cities because they were said to be filled of riches • His expedition was started because a priest said he saw a golden city among the Zuni Indians • Coronado never did find any Golden cities but claimed a lot of land for Spain

Important Facts • Born around 1510 • Born in Salamanca Spain • Sailed to Mexico with the first viceroy of Mexico • Looked for The Seven Cities of Cibola • His men discovered the Grand Canyon, the Colorado Plateau, and the Painted Desert • His expedition was branded a failure by the Spanish • Died in 1554

  4. Miscellaneous • Coronado was accompanied by 300 Spanish soldiers and 1,000 Indian slaves • Killed many Zuni Indians • His camp was dangerously close to the Pueblo Indians
