Coronado’s Backstory • Coronado was born in Salamanca, Spain in 1510. • He was born a nobel man but his brother claimed most of his family’s wealth. • On his expedition he was joined by 340 Spanish,300 Indian allies, and 1,000 slaves, both native Americans and Africans. • Coronado came to America (sent by a Spanish ruler) to seek glory and fortune. • Coronado led one of the best European explorations of the North American interior.

  3. More Of Coronado’s Back story • Coronado began his exploration in 1540. • Coronado came to America to seek glory and fortune. • Coronado led one of the best European explorations of the North American interior. • He died on September 22, 1544.

  5. Motives • Coronado’s older brother claimed most of his family’s wealth. • He wanted to be wealthy, just like his brother.

  6. His Route • Coronado’s route landed him in Cibola. • He went through Mexico, Arizona, New Mexico, a tiny bit through Texas and Oklahoma, and Kansas.

  8. What He Found • Coronado found Indian Publos. • He did not find any riches though. = =

  9. No Money~ Coronado’s Reaction • Coronado was very angry that he didn’t find any money. • He was so angry he had the Indians strangled before he left.

  10. Back To New Spain • Coronado was very angry when he returned. • No one considered Coronado’s expedition a success, except the missionaries who used it to spread Christianity.

Coronado National Memorial • The Coronado Memorial honors the first organized exploration in the Southwest . • The memorial is located in a natural area on the international border on the southeast side of the Huachuca Mountains,south of Arizona. • The memorial confirms the ties that connect the U.S. and Mexico.

  13. What Is Seen At The Memorial • Many different types of butterflies are seen around the memorial.
