  1. Lesson 9AOW Help Session2.2 Reviewing Elements of a story Purpose To annotate and analytically respond to non-fiction article To identify elements of a short story and place them on a plot diagram To create characters and conflicts for an original short story

  2. AOW Help Session • Get out your AOW… let’s have some work time • Check: Talk to the Text • Check: Short Answer • Check: Essay • Work Time

  3. Elements of a Short Story/ Narrative • A short story is a form of a narrative. Narratives include made-up stories – fiction – as well as real-life stories – nonfiction. A short story is a work of fiction, and this genre includes certain literary elements. • Work with a partner and brainstorm in the My Notes section a list of elements of a plot. After discussing the meaning of terms about plot, place the elements of plot that you identified in the appropriate place on the blank story diagram below.

  4. Academic Vocab / Literary Terms • Define the following found on page 90 • Characters • Main Character/Protagonist • Minor Characters • Theme • Point of View • Imagery • Figurative Language • Symbol • Allusion

  5. Planning a Story • In preparation for writing your own short story, hypothesize what you might include in a short story. Your ideas could become the basis of your short story for EA1. • Think about a character for your short story. Create a name and two important characteristics of your character’s personality. • An essential element of a short story’s plot is conflict. Think about possible conflicts that you could use to develop a plot and use the prompts on page 90 to think about both an internal and external conflict for your character.

  6. Exit Ticket • Based on the planning activity from page 90, write a 2-3 short story about your chosen character. • Think: Who is the character? What are they like? What are their strengths/weaknesses? • What problem are they going to face? Who is the antagonist? • Where is the setting? What time period does it take place? • Feel free to just write the exposition!
