1. Murder at PortoBeach Office Number 16 Members: Nikki Hunter Claudia Lucian Harvey ; Holly Brammer; Alana Douglas ; Gurdeep Kaur ; Zachary Harp; Adam Painter; Arfan Shafiq; Yael Maor 

2. Office 16 Report Police office 16 have successfully resolved the rise in domestic Violence murder in PortoBeach. This office, began it’s work by gathering evidence case studies of murders from Florida, Glasgow and Manchester. The office noted a rise in murder typology of domestic Violence. As an office, a statistical analysis was carried out, where it was found that most murders occur at the home of the victim. On the third week the office has created a list of institutes which aim to both prevent, and assist with the aftermath of domestic abuse. The office findings were than made public on a press release available in the PortoBeach Chronicles.

3. Investigation Week One – Gathering Intelligence Introductions were completed by all by the end of the first. Case Studies were also completed in time and included cases of serial murders, domestic killings and gang-related killings. The Senior Investigation Officer Yael Maor

4. Key Findings The key skills exercised in week one were: • Research • Collating information • Analysing data The murder victims were found to have these characteristics: • Women • Middle aged • Silent Victims

5. Case Studies-common Links • All nine case studies involved murder from Manchester, Glasgow & Florida • Murder weapons included: • Guns & knives – 2, Guns – 2, knives – 1, other – 3 (these included a stick, a paving slab & a table leg) • Number and gender of victims • 7 case studies had 1 victim, 1 case study had 2 victims & 1 case study had 3 victims • 7 victims were male & 5 victims were female • Males were the offender in all but 1 case study were a man & a woman were the offenders

6. Analysis-common link In most cases the victim knew their murder 2 cases were linked to domestic violence, 3 were gun & gang related, 1 was rape & 2 related to burglary & brutally violence murder 3 cases were solved through DNA evidence from blood stain & the rest of the cases were solved by eyewitnesses that gave evidence One case is still unsolved. As a team we agreed that the office’s victim typology is domestic abuse.

7. Statistical Analysis During the second week we analysed statistical data prom PortoBeach and compared it to Florida, Scotland and England. The office examine the trend of crime statistics in PortoBeach. The office examined the statistical data with regards to the location in which the crime has occurred and produced a corresponding table of crime by location.

8. Key Findings The statistical analysis of data found: • Porto Beach has a higher than average murder crime compared to Scotland, England & Florida • The murder rate fluctuated. We accounted for this given the rise at certain times of the year – Christmas • The majority of domestic incidents resulting in murder occurred in the victims residential dwelling How the team responded to budget cuts and a new murder: • Directing the police to patrol ‘crime hot spots’ to ensure that crime rates were reduced. • Cut over time for Officers, which reduces the problem of paying excessive wages. • Encourage neighbourhood watch to reduce police time.

12. Key Findings The key findings this week: • There are numerous agencies which help domestic abuse victims in England, America and Scotland. • Some institutes aid in prevention of crime (or the escalations of crimes ) such as Manchester City Council • Most institutes aid with the after math of events, as well as attempting to reduce the escalation of it.

13. Investigation Week Four – Press Release Re assured the public. Pro actively promoted campaigns to eradicate domestic violence. Recognised the problem of domestic abuse in Porto Beach, issued measures to help those in need. Inform the community of ways to recognise the signs of domestic abuse.

14. Key Findings • Successful press release containing details of… • Who murdered the victim. • Background information on the victim being domestically abused for years, and not telling anyone despite having young children. • The plea from the guilty husband, and the sentence of 28 years which he received. • Due to the murder, the police in Porto Beach have now staffed areas according to which areas have higher domestic abuse rates. • Different types of help for victims of domestic violence have been established such as Women’s Aid. • This case prompted the police to launch a campaign to encourage neighbours to report anything they believe to be domestic violence. • Completely eliminating domestic abuse is an ideal situation, and in a bid to try and achieve this there have been proposals to re-evaluate the current punishment for domestic abusers.

Holly Brammer • Public Information Researcher • The main contributions I have made are; • Participating to each weeks task by researching the topic to ensure good answers. • Regularly checking for updates from other team members so I could add comments and ideas to see if there was any room for expansion. • The biggest challenge I faced... • I feel that communication was the biggest challenge as there were students from Manchester, Glasgow and Florida which meant everybody would be accessing Porto Beach at different times, I sometimes felt it was hard to get a discussion going because of this. • From taking part in this investigation I have acquired numerous skills which would be useful in the real world and for future employment, these are; • Being able to communicate and get to know people from different countries in the world via internet communication. • Successfully researching a topic and collecting data on a variety of subjects, and then being able to put forward the relevant information I found out. • Working well as a group, and overcoming issues such as clashes of opinion and time differences. As a team, we managed to successfully complete each weeks task.

Zachary Harp • Geographical Information Analyst • Contributions made to office 16: • Incite to understanding criminal data. • Contributed to the discussions as best I could. • Offered my opinion on each weeks topic. • Challenges: • The difference in the time between the US and England and Scotland. It made participating in the active discussions difficult. • Skills Developed: • Working with others despite drastic differences in both locality and culture.

21. Yael Maor • Senior Investigating Officer • My contribution to the office was • To ensure that the weekly task was carried out in timely fashion. • Attempt to motivate every officer to contribute by prompting discussions, and not excluding officers from tasks • The biggest challenge I have faced was to motivate all officers to participate regularly in group discussions. As well as reaching decisions which I believed would benefit the whole group, rather than just the selected few. • Skills I have gathered: As SIO I believe I have learnt about the difficulties of leadership, as well as improved my communication skills with new people. I feel I have also learnt time management skills which can benefit me in future employment.

22. Alana DouglasEvidence Disclosure Officer. The main contributions I have made to this project are: Making sure I participated fully within each weeks task. Collating research, checking group members progress everyday to ensure that I could expand from other members comments. The biggest challenge I faced was trying to get to know each member of our group, due to members being situated in different areas it was difficult to try and interact with everyone on a daily basis. I have acquired a number of skills that would be useful in the real world and in future employment from taking part in this investigation, those are: Getting to know individuals from different parts of the world and communicating with them through information communication technology. Being able to take part in group tasks which at first seemed difficult, but having worked with each member of the group we managed to complete the task in hand. Researching and collating data on a regular basis.

Claudia Lucian HarveyPublic Information Researcher • Participation in each week’s tasks: • By researching on the topic areas each week and come up with data relevant to the topic. • The biggest challenge I faced: • I found it very difficult to communicate online without seeing people face to face and having to discuss the project with other group members online . However in the end I became used to the idea and came up with successful contributions. • I have acquired a number of skills from doing this project: • The skills I achieved from this project are working well as a team, working under time pressure, being able to work with others in different places and improved my communication skills.
