  4. Themes • Judgement; everyone was being judged. Ruben was being judged as an alcoholic although he never admitted it, Susan was labelled as a bad mother, Peter was also an alcoholic Zoya, the stereotypical foreign supermodel, and Damian because he is gay. • Relationships; Ruben and Zoya broke up, and Virginia was the rebound girl, they weren’t in a real relationship as they were both recovering over something which was why they held on in the relationship and relied on each other. Susan just wants to help Ruben but doesn’t how to and continues to pressure him to drink. Peter and Ruben’s relationship is revolved around alcohol, and because Ruben tried to quit drinking their relationship was also damaged as a result . • Peer pressure; everyone pressured Ruben to drink (apart from Virginia) and so it made him struggle as he wasn’t getting the support he needed. His boss relied on the alcohol for Ruben to come up with good ideas and Damian pressures Ruben to drink and do drugs as he relies on Ruben for a good time. Peter pressures Ruben to drink, as they only time they bond is when they are both drinking.

  5. Symbols Bottle of water: this was symbolising a recovery treatment, which Ruben carried around with him most of the time he was on stage. The couch: this was private space used by a lot of the characters, especially when the whole set was dark and the spotlight was on them. It was also the seat where the characters sat when there was an obstacle. Chains: they were part of the set and represented champagne bubbles/anything alcoholic and sparkly. There is a scene where Ruben is drinking a glass of water and throws it through the chains showing that he’s overcoming his addiction and “breaking through”

  6. how it relates to real life situations Ruben Guthrie is based on a true life story about a man and his alcoholic struggles . The audience can understand the influence and power of alcohol and how it can make and break a person. The journey began with Ruben having his life based on alcohol giving him the “good life” it was only until an outsider (Zoya-fiance) woke him up to the reality and had to face living life without alcohol, affecting his work and relationships. This relates to real life as it is a common addiction amongst society especially in New Zealand. It is also a warning to the audience that you don’t have to be co-dependent on alcohol in order to have a good time. Many teenagers and pre adults can relate to the thrill and adrenalin rush to drinking alcohol and therefore can know how it feels to be in Ruben’s shoes, making it more appealing towards the audience.
