House With No Steps (HWNS) saw it vital that our staff are competent in the administration of medication to the clients that we support. Training is required on the first day of employment it is essential to have that training delivered internally by an appropriately qualified staff member, preferably a registered nurse. This training will overcome the challenges we face to provide on a regular basis to those with a lack of computer skills or in remote areas. This will provide an environment they are able to deal with more comfortably and give a greater opportunity to interact via distance House With No Steps (HWNS) has services in areas that align to NBN pilot sites including Armidale, Townsville (both Aitkenvale and Mundingburra) and Wollongong.
The Project Safe Medication management has been a goal of House with No Steps (HWNS) for a number of years. Staff training in this area has been a focused action for some time. However, given the geographical range and the diversity of staff within HWNS it has been challenging to achieve the training coverage required. There are significant risks associated with the safe administration of medications over a range of problem areas, which include Disparity of quality of training Lack of awareness of the issues Lack of a consistent approach Adoption of local practices that do not meet best practice options Lack of suitably qualified staff Lack of support by the local health/Medical Practioner Differing values and understanding
A large number of staff at HWNS have been training in face to face in the accredited assist with medication as a stand alone process. This was to address the large number of medication errors. Using live streaming technology across the NBN, HWNS will provide a demonstration of how to administer medications, including use of Webster packs, techniques for people reluctant to take medications and how to write up medication administration or report incidents. Using live streaming, observe employees undertaking the medication administration process in a controlled environment Assess the practical competence of staff in medication administration Using other online tools (eg Microsoft Lync) demonstrate the documentation requirements associated with medication administration and assess student / employee competence.

Lync Server 2010 detects who is speaking and then sends the applicable video stream to all participants
Test Sites The Townsville site -has ADSL2. Subject was very important, and was great to have the training, even for those who have done it previously. New staff, (only in service 1-2 weeks), whilst stating it was a little rushed, felt they had learnt sufficient to compliment their on the job training. The Outcome Training of staff is an important approach to ensure reductions of error rates minimisation of severe errors that have a negative impact on the individuals we support. The ability to have face to face training remains a positive method of engaging people, engage people with online training has expanded the range opportunity and reduced the down time of travel and extra costs of accommodation etc. The positives in undertaking online training were Ability to have a focused discussion on the subject at hand The ability to see the person/s Reduce the time between request for training and actual training Areas that could be improved Lag time picture and sound Location of camera restricts the amount of people that can be viewed at once Training in the options available on the lynx system Poor focus in Bateman Bay Sound quality needs to be addressed Ability to show documents on computer and still see the participants
Easily transferable to other vital areas of training eg use of epipens, diabetes and epilepsy support (Elements of CHCICS303A – Support individual health & emotional well being) Procedure and protocols developed for delivering training via this medium Development of package of effective delivery using this medium Effective risk management and better outcomes for people with a disability we support Increased readiness of staff for participation in e-learning A model for other organizations to follow. HWNS could compare effectiveness of learning (Benefits include being able to access appropriately skilled personnel and providing a “just in time” solution – vital for this work) It is anticipated that 20 people could be trained at any one time The learning approach is to ensure that students are competently trained and assessed through the use of live video streaming software technology for administration of medication.
