  4. First of all, You would surely want to ask these questions to your tutors…

  5. 1. How can I identify my own type ofpresentation? • What type of presentation am I suppose to do? • How much time am I given? • What must I include in my presentation? • How is it graded / evaluated? • Do I need audio visuals? • Do I need elaborations? • Will there be Q & A after my presentation? • Who are my audience?

  6. Then, You need to ask these questions to yourself…

  7. 2. How do I know myself as a presenter? • What are my strengths? How can I use them? • What are weaknesses? How can I overcome or minimize them? • Do I have any fears as a speaker?

  8. 3. How should I start? • From where exactly should I start speaking? • Do I need visual aids? If I do, can the audience be able to see it clearly? • Will I be able to make eye contact with my audience? • Have I got anything in my pocket which might rattle and create a distraction? • How will I start my presentation? What would be my introduction? • Do I have any handouts to be distributed to the audience? Will the handouts be useful?

  9. 4. How can I make my presentation work? • Expectations What will the audience expect from me? • Knowledge and experience How much do they know about my topic? What technical language and jargon don’t they know? • Background What type of people are they? My friends? People I have never met? My tutor?

Or Do I care? • Opinions What pre-conceived opinions do they have on my topic? • Attitude and feelings What is their attitude towards my topic and me? -preconceived feelings, prejudices or fear

How can I make my presentation work? • Decision Making If persuasion is your end result : How does your audience reach their decision? • Problems What awkward questions might the audience ask? What objections might they raise? What interpersonal problems might you have to deal with, for example people who disagree with you?

  12. Now, What does an ‘oral presentation’ actually mean?

  13. An oral presentation tends to cover many different activities such as: • Giving a speech to a large audience • Telling ways of doing things • Reportingnews • Training a group of people • Promotinga product • Teaching a lesson

  14. The different activities would have its own aim and objectives: Aim: A general purpose that you want to achieve Objectives: The more specific things that you want to express or say

Aim and Objectives What should your aim be? • To orally argue the topic that you have chosen for the research paper What should your objectives be? • Explain what initiated you to do the research • Express your beliefs • Share an Islamic view (s) on the topic • Persuade others to agree with you • Offer recommendations

  19. Q: The Introduction • How long will it be? • Do I have an attention getter? What is it? • What should I do to make my introduction interesting? • My thesis statement? • How will I move from the introduction to my argumentations?

Answer:Enthusiasm and Appropriateness The introduction and the attention-getter • You must show real interest in your topic • Be lively and cheerful as it can be infectious • Use appropriate attention-getters to attract your audience especially your friends from the other kulliyahs • Use appropriate attention-getters to relate directly to the purpose of the presentation and to focus on the topic

The Attention-getters You may use • An anecdote • An appropriate quote • A controversial, thought-provoking statement • An extremely short but appropriate joke • A relevant question directed to the audience • Asking for examples • Who can give me an example of…? • Giving facts • Did you know that…? • A relevant visual record of your presentation information • The issue

Q: The Arguments • Do I need to include the supporting details? • Should I also mention quotations or citations? • How do I move from one argument to the other? or, • How do I move from one argument to the counter argument and then back to the refutation? • How do I include the Islamic perspective?

  23. Q: The Conclusion • Have I presented all my arguments, counter argument, refutation & the Islamic perspective? • How do I conclude? Should I just tie them all up together? • Should I make a plea? • Should I repeat my stance? • Have I successfully persuaded my audience? • On what note should I end my presentation? • Should I offer recommendations?

Answer:Accuracy, Credibility and Clarity Arguments, conclusion and recommendations • You should use accurate words and grammar to deliver meaning • You should be knowledgeable and well-versed in the topic presented • You should present reliable and valid ideas and supports • You should be precise and should avoid too much jargons

  26. You should • be very confident • be fluent • be enthusiastic about the subject • be interesting • be in tune with the audience • be easily understood • be entertaining / humorous • be in control • try to keep the audience involved

  27. Your language should • have few errors • Be clear • have good and effective sentence structures • be in the argumentative tone

  28. The content needs to be • a clear summary of the term paper with the complete content given • well organized, coherent

  29. Non-verbal messages in an oral presentation

  30. Non-verbal messages • Self-presentation Think of your appearances • Body movements Check on your eye contact, facial expression ad gesture • Paralanguage Check the quality of your voice (volume, rate, pitch) Check if you tend to use too much vocal interferences like “uh”, “ah”, “er”….

  32. You shall be judged by 3 things • The way you feel about the topic, the audience, and him/herself • The way the presentation is organised • The way you delivers the presentation

You should observe other speakers. • What did the presenter do or not do? • Why was the presentation poor? • Any nervousness-mannerism, repetitive movements? e.g. • swaying from side to side, • playing with pen, • persistent clearing the throat etc. • Inadequate preparation? • Difficult to follow? • Pitched at the wrong level? • Alienating the audience? • Boring? • Too long?

  34. You might not get your second chance! Your success depends on you! Changing the audience from how they see it now …….. …………………to how they will have to see it if they are to commit themselves to the end result.

You might not get your second chance! • You want your presentation to be smooth. • What will you have to do? • Rehearse, rehearse and rehearse!!! • Your timing MUST be right. • Avoid reading from notes. You just need points. • Practice speaking in front of the mirror or your friends or your loved ones. Get them to comment on your presentation. GOOD LUCK!
