What is an Industrial PhD Project? • A PhD project directed towards research issues and questions in Enterprises • A partnership between an Enterprise, a University and a PhD Student • The Industrial PhD education encompasses a full PhD degree and an Industrial PhD title • The Industrial PhD name (ErhvervsPhD) is a ”brand name”, which signals innovation and scientific dedication!

  3. Historical tour de force of the Industrial PhD programme • Embarked in 1970 as a 2 year study called Erhvervsforsker ordningen. The setting of the programme was suggested by the Danish Academy of Technology (ATV) who also administered it. • In the late 1980’s the Industrial PhD was acknowledged as a full 3 to 4 years PhD study • Since 2002 The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation has administered the Industrial PhD programme under the Danish name of ErhvervsPhD • The Budget for 2005-08 for the programme is DDK 49Million (€6.6Million)a year ~ app. 70 Industrial PhD projects per year. • In 2004 70 projects has been approved. • Industrial PhD-students constitutes 5 percent of Denmark's 5000 active PhD students

Political benchmark for the Industrial PhD programme • The Industrial PhD programme should be applied in a broad spectra of scientific areas and industrial sectors • At least 40% of the Industrial PhD students will be employed in small and medium sized enterprises (less than 250 employees) • 30 to 40% of projects should be localized outside the Greater Copenhagen region

  5. Profile of the host enterprises in 2003 • 64 Industrial PhD projects were approved • 31% in small enterprises • (less than 50 employees) • 17 % in medium size enterprises • (50 to 250 employees) • 48 % in large enterprises • (more than 250 employees)

Industrial PhD: Research in issues relevant to private enterprises Application approved by universities and the Ministry 6 months of PhD courses (30 ECTS) the mandatory Industrial PhD course Employed within an Enterprise, but study half the time at the university It is recommended that the student participates in courses at foreign universities 800 hours dissemination of research knowledge Traditional PhD.: Research project The application is approved by the university 6 months courses (30 ECTS points) Employed with the university Mandatory participation in courses outside the host university preferably abroad 800 hours teaching and dissemination of research results Industrial PhD vs. Traditional PhD

  8. Payment to different types of Danish PhD programmes

The Ministry pays: €1346 per. month in subsidy to the salary (The company pays DDK €1885 pr. month) Up to €40385 in subsidy to the university (Danish or foreign) €6060 in subsidy to the co-advisor from another university or public research institute. The Company pays: Salary. From €3163 pr. month (average €3760) All other costs to R&D related to the project, administration other overheads in the enterprise Average costs for the enterprise are €47 115 per year (salary, R&D & overhead) How much support for an Industrial PhD?
