Alcohol Advisory Council of NZ • A Crown Entity established by an Act of Parliament in 1976 • Primary advisor to government on all matters related to alcohol • Funded by a levy imposed on all alcohol products sold in NZ • Primary roles - promotion of moderation and reduction of alcohol-related harm for all New Zealanders

  3. Our Vision • A New Zealand drinking culture that supports the moderate use of alcohol so that whänau and communities enjoy life, free from alcohol harm

  5. Aim • To improve and enhance Pacific peoples wellbeing by reducing alcohol-related harm

  6. PACIFIC DEMOGRAPHICS Pacific peoples 6.9% (265,974) of NZ population 67% reside in Auckland Samoans (49%), Cook Islands (22 %), Tongans (19%), Niueans (8%), Fijian (4%), Tokelauan (3%), Tuvalu (1%), Other Pacific (1%) Almost half the total Pacific population is aged 0-19 years

  7. The median age of Pacific people is only 21 • 2 in 5 PI people are under the age of 15 • Only 3% are over 65 • The average PI income is only $14,800 • 6 out of 10 PIs were born in New Zealand

  8. Why a priority? • The few who drink do so in a way that harms themselves and/or others

  9. Role Purpose • A leadership role to facilitate organizational implementation of the Pacific Action Plan

  13. HOW WILL WE KNOW WE HAVE BEEN SUCCESFUL? Communities promote and practice responsible use of alcohol Harmful connection between alcohol and sport is considerably reduced Treatment services and other AOD interventions are effective Reduced alcohol consumption Less alcohol-related harm (violence, crime and injuries) Reduction in young people drinking before the age of 18 Young people, families and communities are healthier and enjoy a better quality of life…
