  1. National Standards Presentation 24 March 2010

  2. Format • Background of how the National Standards came about and what the school has done • Where are our children in relation to the National Standards • How we determine where each child is in relation to the National Standards • What will it look like • Questions and Answers

  3. Requirements for Schools NAG 2A • Where a school has students enrolled in years 1-8, the board of trustees, with the principal and teaching staff, is required to use National Standards to: • (a) report to students and their parents on the student’s progress and achievement in relation to National Standards. Reporting to parents in plain language in writing must be at least twice a year;

  4. What are National Standards ? • The New Zealand Curriculum, recognised as a world class document, sets the broad direction for student learning • The National Standards set clear and consistent expectations that describe what students need to do in reading, writing and mathematics for all students from Years 1 to 8 e.g. After Two Years at School – The Reading Standard ‘After two years at school, students will read,respond to, and think critically about fiction and non-fiction texts at the Turquoise level of Ready to Read (the core instructional series that supports reading in the NZ Curriculum)

  8. How do we determine where our children are at in relation to the National Standards? • Teachers will form an ‘Overall Teacher Judgement’ (OTJ) about each students performance in relation to the National Standards • A range of day to day observations and assessments will be used by the teacher and the student to provide evidence of where the student is currently learning and where to next. • The teachers need to consider not just how well a student is reading and writing but how they are using these skills in all curriculum areas in an independent way

  9. What will it look like on the Learning Plan?Progress in Relation to National StandardsReading StandardOverall Teacher Judgement

  10. What Do These O.T.J.’s Mean ? • Above – a students current level of achievement is at a standard above their year group which means that consideration needs to be given to their learning needs to provide them with challenge to continue their accelerated rate of progress into the future. • At – a student is currently meeting the standard and effective classroom teaching should enable them to meet or well exceed the standard next year. • Below - A student is currently not meeting the standard, but there is every reason to believe that their learning needs can be accommodated within effective differentiated classroom teaching in order to meet the standard next year. • Well Below – More than a year below the expected standard, consideration needs to be given to their learning needs and specific actions in addition to the differentiated classroom teaching may need to be taken.

  11. How the information will be used to help our children? * The main purpose for any form of assessment is to improve students’ learning and teachers’ teaching as both teacher and student respond to the information that assessment gives them. * Our Student Learning Plans will show where the student is at with their learning, the next learning steps and how the family can help in partnership with the school. The most important information is the progress value that is being added. * The assessments, through our self review processes, can also help us to identify strengths and areas for improvement in individuals and groups of learners school wide so that we can plan actions to lift achievement. This information helps us to respond to the needs of our staff through professional development.
