Ask yourself, “What am I trying to prove?” • May require several sentences of “set up” before the actual thesis • Think about the.. • …WHAT—claim about event or historical topic …HOW—the events, ideas, sources, etc. that you choose to prove your claim …WHY—the significance of your idea in terms of understanding the history/narrative as a whole (answers the extremely important “so what?” question)

This paper will discuss Harry Truman’s decision to drop the bomb on Hiroshima. vs. • Harry Truman’s decision to drop the bomb on Hiroshima was motivated by racism. • The US confrontation with the Soviets was the key factor in Truman’s decision to drop the bomb on Hiroshima. • In his decision to drop the bomb on Hiroshima, Truman was unduly influenced by hawks in his cabinet.
