  1. Initial Tests on Vacuum Thermogravimetric Apparatus (TGA) at Glenn Research Center Feb 2012 Sample

  2. Macro-View of C-103 Coupon after Exposure to Vacuum at 1600C Appears to show etching and grain boundary attack  Possible degradation in mechanical properties Need to examine with electron microscope

  3. Comments on Further Studies • Pushing C-103 to extreme conditions • Initial weight gain on heat-up (condensed phase oxide?) • Then weight loss (vaporization and/or oxygen enhanced vaporization?) • Appears to be some type of vaporization/outgassing • Need to determine if related to oxygen—critical factor with refractory metals • Suggest further TGA tests with zirconia oxygen sensor • Possibly use oxygen getter in furnace • Suggest some mass spectrometer tests to identify vapor species • Post examination of samples with electron microscope • Information on mission parameters • Estimates of oxygen content in space? • How long at highest temperatures?
