1. Power Cycling Simple Tips to Restore Internet Connectivity
2. Verify the Problem Is it your PC only, or is it all PCs?
Check your PC with 2 websites
Check another PC for connectivity -or-
Ask a co-worker if they can get to the internet
3. Your Equipment
A Wireless Router
[Some designs will look different]
A MODEM
4. What you want to see Lights on the front of the Router
A SOLID Link light on the MODEM
5. Power Cycle the Router Remove the power cord directly from the back of the router
Leave it removed for 30 seconds
Plug the power cord back in
Be patient- allow a minute for the router to resume its work
DO NOT press the reset button. The router will lose all settings.
6. Power Cycle the MODEM Remove the power cord directly from the back of the MODEM
Leave it unplugged for 30 seconds
Plug it back in
Be patient wait for the LINK or DSL light to become solid [Typically within 60 to 90 seconds]
7. After Power Cycling Check for a SOLID link light on the MODEM
If the link light remains flashing, you wont have internet its time to call the IT Dept.
Check again for Internet connectivity
8. Dont Be Scared!! But dont do things blindly either!
Connectors do have specific places
Power Cycling does not harm the equipment
You probably wont get shocked
9. Tips Roughly of connectivity problems are solved by power cycling the router or MODEM
Dont stack the router & MODEM
Dont cover them they will get hot
Check with others before power cycling they may lose work
Dont be intimidated to take these steps before calling IT
This shouldnt be a regular thing never on a weekly or daily basis
