  2. Thank you for participating in our Drill

  3. B-UMS Drills • In the last calendar year, BUMS has participated in many drills. • Each drill is an opportunity to practice what we need to do in case of an emergency. • Remember last year when we had drills during Career Café and during the BUCCANEERTHON? • Remember last year when we had a real fire scare? There was A LOT of thick black smoke and we had to exit the building in an epic amount of time. • These drills are intended to help us be prepared for anything, anytime so that we all stay SAFE.

Some notes about our recent drills • During our last fire drill, it took 1 minute 53 seconds for all staff and students to safely exit the building. • It takes the Buckhannon Fire Department approximately 5 minutes to arrive on scene at B-UMS. We are lucky to have our PRO officer with us at all times. • When we have drills, our Principals, Officer Day and anyone else available, practice responding to the drill as if it were a real emergency. They search the building, pretend to call 911 and talk about what steps they need to take to make sure that everyone is safe. • Our Principals do these things (and more) every time we drill. They even work with community agencies to learn about more things we need to do to improve our safety. • A detailed report is completed after each drill. It talks about our success and our areas to improve.

  5. In our December drill… • Remember, we had a medical emergency drill. • The scenario we received is that several 7th graders had eaten chicken that made them ill. The students were in three classrooms in the 8th grade hallway. The company who arrange our drills chose students to act in the roles of the sick students. The teachers immediately pretended that they had several sick students and took steps to get medical help. • Principals, our nurse, Clinic Staff and Office B staff assisted the ill students. We made sure everyone was given medical care, and we arranged for each of their parents to be contacted. All of that was happening while everyone else was locked down. • This is just one more example of how we try to prepare for any type of safety situation.

  6. Now it is your turn,Please assign someone to take notes and discuss the following: 1. What questions do you have about today’s drill? 2. What worries do you have about this drill scenario? 3. What do you think about when we have a lockdown drill? How does it make you feel? Write these answers on a sheet of paper and turn it in to the counselors at the end of this lesson (make sure to write the Advisory name on the top of the page)

  7. Now, Grade your group on an A-F scale (be honest about your performance, this is a serious matter) What is your grade for: 1. time taken to lock down? 2. ability to stay quiet and hidden? 3. if someone attempted to get into your room, did you react in a safe manner? 4. did your group work as a team to lockdown and get into a safe position? 5. your teacher on their effort to keep you safe? 6. your class on their effort to keep everyone safe?

  8. Please turn in your responses to the counselors (make sure your Advisory name is on the paper). • Thank you for taking care of one another. Be Safe.
