  2. Overview After the Civil War, the United States was divided against itself. The states were in bad need of reconstruction, which is the re-building of a nation so it can work together. There were two types of reconstruction, the Congressional and the Presidential. In the Congressional, it talked of how African Americans are freed and have every privilege the whites had even though they were treated badly. In the Presidential version, it talks of how the two presidents, Lincoln and Andrew Johnson had their views on how the slaves should be treated.

  3. Reconstruction T-chart Congressional Presidential Lincoln Accept southerners back into the union (Dec. 1863) Lincoln announced 10% plan (10% of voters announce loyalty to union) States can form new Govt., as long as slavery is banned Wanted southerners who supported the union to take charge Freedman’s Bureau Established School’s Let freed slaves acquire land Offered free transportation to African Americans Helps southerners who support the Union Staffed mostly teachers from the North Gave aid to African Americans in the institution of learning Help freed slaves obtain fair wages in jobs Andrew Johnson Announced the restoration plan on May 1865 Southerners granted privileges Believed the wealthy tricked the south so governors were appointed to south states to hold constitutional conventions Only whites who have sworn their loyalties could vote

  4. Andrew Johnson Lincoln Johnson opposed letting all freed African Americans the rights to vote Believe the south should decided what freed men can and can’t do Granted African Americans a right to vote who had an education
