Analysis of Driving Behavior in a Multidisciplinary Setting • Goals: • To study driving behavior in order to reduce traffic crashes and their severity, • to reduce traffic law violations and their severity, and • make the driving experience in Iowa a safer, saner activity • by changing roadways, licensing standards and practices, driver control and sanctioning laws and remedial driver programs.

  4. Iowa’s Multidisciplinary Efforts With Other State Agency Partners • Iowa Department of Public Health enlisted the help of the Iowa Department of Transportation in Iowa’s Crash Outcomes Data Evaluation System (CODES).

University of IowaUniversity Hospitals • Utilizing driver simulators, Psychology staff, Public Policy Center, hospital research facilities, medical and research staff for: • Cooperative Studies of Older Drivers to Create New Methods for Testing the Capabilities of Older Drivers • Cooperative study of Graduated Driver License • Cooperative study on new .08 BAC Law • Policy strategies for roadway investment

Iowa State University andThe Center for Transportation Research and Education • Utilizing the University’s engineering, GIS, and crash data expertise for: • Statistical analysis studies of older driver behavior on different roadways • GIS-based studies of crash data and crash mapping • Speed limit studies of traffic fatalities. • Iowa Traffic Safety Data Service • Sociological Statistical Analysis of Census data • Educating and training Michael Pawlovich

  8. University of Northern Iowa • Utilize the sociological and polling expertise as well as expertise in emerging areas for: • Older Driver Overrepresentation in Crashes • Sociologically-based Polls and Surveys

Utilizing Other University-based Research • Building a reference system for the use of transportation professionals to set policy for roadway safety programs and legislative initiatives by collecting: • research studies on effect cell phone use on driving performance, the effect on driving performance of other driving distracters and studies on the effect of so-called “multi-tasking” on driving performance. • research studies on older drivers and the ability of the elderly to meet the tasks of driving. • research studies on young drivers and how young people approach the driving tasks and driving risk.
