Project Area: 21,000 km2 • Total Population: 87,000 households • Rural Population: 75,000 households • Target Group: 67,000 households • Poverty: 90% of rural households • Economic Assets: Port Sudan road & the • Gash Agricultural Scheme (GAS) • GAS is: • (6) Irrigation Blocks: Kassala, Mekali, Degain, • Tendelei, Metateib and • Hadaliya • Command Area: 240,000 fed • Rotation:3 years • Management: Parastatal 1.b. 6. Have more than 1 fed. Registered. • Have more than 5 cattle & over 12 small ruminants. • No land, no livestock. • Earns living from casual labour. • Includes 4,500 WHH. • Small area (> 0.5 fed), few small ruminants and may be a caw. • Income derived from charcoal and casual labour. • Cultivate 1 fed. or sharecrop <2 fed. • Have up to to 2 of cattle and 10 small ruminants.

Project Interventions Effects • Increase in cultivated area in GAS from an average of 30,000 to an average of 75,000 fed . and introduction of cash crops (Rehabilitation). • Screening of GAS farmers books, and access to cultivate in the last 3 seasons (Reform). • Strengthening of the PIAs through provision of equipment and machineries. • River training works decreased the flood damages and maintained the Gash River to its main course. • Formation of operational legal basic organizations. • Decrease in malnutrition from 25% to 20% during 2006- 2008.

Project Interventions Cont. • Decrease in the animal mortality rate from 7% to 3.2%. • Decrease in animal diseases incidence from 80% to 42%. • Decrease in illiteracy rate 66% to 58% for men and from 74% to 59% for women during the period 2006 – 2008. • Improvement of the domestic water supply.

Challenges • Access of farmers of GAS (including women)to at least 3 fed. each: (Reform) • Mesquite control • Land leveling • Efficient irrigation water management • Screening of farmers registers • Issue of IDs. • Low cost estimates for civil works: • Force Account. • Difference in design. • Doing works through contractors. • Frequency of high floods. • Sustainability • Adoption of technical agricultural policies. • Shared vision of development and finding solutions to the institutional constraints. • Marketing policies. • Efficient basic organizations. • Timely flow of funds for operation. • Strengthening the M&E system
