  3. Partner Share • How can a new place you’ve never been to before, like a desert or a prairie, help you to find an adventure? • What jobs might lead someone to have an adventure in the prairie? • What hobbies might someone have that take place in a desert?

  4. Amazing Words • Carefree- to have no worries • They lived a carefree life in the mountains. • Relish-to enjoy something greatly • I relish chocolate cake. • Vanish- to disappear suddenly • The bunny vanished into the bushes. • Teach your partner these words

  5. Prefix im- • Prefix im-is from Latin, and it means “not” • Im + patient= impatient • Someone who is not able to wait without becoming annoyed • Im+polite= impolite • When someone doesn’t use manners in their actions or when they speak

  6. Prefix im- • im + mortal= immortal • Something that is unable to die • Im + mature= immature • Not showing maturity • What does this mean? • Im + perfect = imperfect? • im+ mobile= immobile?

Greek and Latin Roots • Knowing the meanings of Greek or Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes can help them understand a word they don’t know. • We are going to read a story called “The Cave in the Cliff”. You are going to make a list of all the words you can find that have a Greek or Latin root. Write what you think it means.

  12. Petroglyphs • Petroglyphs are pictures that are carved into the rock

  13. Plot • The plot is in the sequence of events • The four parts of a typical plot on a timeline are: • Conflict, Rising action, Climax, resolution

  14. Climax • In the story “The Day of Two Adventures” Gram has left the lunch at home and she’s very hungry. This is the problem. • The climax, or high point, is when Gramps suddenly comes up the mountain, and they smell something good. • This signals me that something is about to happen to resolve the problem.

  15. Character • Character traits in a story • An author will sometimes use the character’s actions and dialogue to help the reader understand what kind of a person they are. It helps a reader predict events based on a character’s traits.

  16. Vocabulary • Abandoned-gave up on • The house had been abandoned for years. • Attempt- effort • He made an attempt to build a shed • Teach your partner these words.

  17. Vocabulary • Bellow- loud yell • The man let out a bellow when he saw the dog in his yard. • Cavern- cave • The kids followed the dog into the cavern. Teach your partner these words.

  21. Negatives • To make a negative statement, use only one negative word: • No: He can’t do nothing. Mary didn’t do nothing to him. • Yes: He can’t do anything. Mary didn’t do anything to him.

  22. Writing • Rhyming Poem • Includes rhyming words • May include figurative language (such as similes and metaphors) • Sensory words • Poetic techniques such as alliteration and onomatopoeia • Graphic elements, such as capital letters
