  2. EAPN – What is it? European Anti Poverty Network. Head office - based in Brussels referred to as EAPN Europe Remit - Lobby and influence debates on Poverty and Social Inclusion

  3. EAPN UK/England EAPN UK – supported by Poverty Alliance Scotland EAPN - England, Scotland, NI, Wales EAPN England - supported by NfE, KAH, KUC, Speke CAB

  4. EAPN – EU 2020 EAPN- campaigned for poverty targets EAPN – Involved in the Platform Against Poverty EAPN– ensures that the voices of people experiencing poverty are heard.

  5. EU 2020 - The strategy • A European Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. • Sets out a vision of Europe’s Social market economy for the 21st Century • Smart Growth • Sustainable Growth • Inclusive Growth

  6. EU2020 - the Context • EY2010 - (European Year 2010) for combatting poverty and social exclusion • EU 10 year strategy – EY2010 marked the end of EU 10 year strategy and signalled the beginning of the next.

  7. A few stats……….. • 79 million people in the EU live below the poverty line (16%) • 1 in 10 Europeans live in a household where nobody works • In 2009 in the UK 22% of women were in jobs earning less the £7 an hour • (figs from www.2010againstpoverty.eu)

  8. EU 2020FLAGSHIPS • Seven Flagship initiatives - to catalyse progress • European Platform Against Poverty - achieving “The Poverty Target” of lifting over 20 million people out of poverty

  9. PLATFORM AGAINST POVERTY Targeted support - from the European Structural Funds Actions - actions taken by member states support poverty target Grassroots involvement - people experiencing poverty

  10. PLATFORM AGAINST POVERTY • First meeting – Krakow, Dec. 2011 • Most recent meeting - March 2012 • EAPN Europe - feed into it. • Progress so far? – coming together • 28th September – Is Europe 2020 delivering on poverty? (see eapn website)

  11. ESF 20% • October 2011 – EU Commission proposed to allocate 20% of European Social Fund for social inclusion and poverty reduction • 26 Member States - seem ready to reject this proposal. http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/EU_Money_for_Poverty_Reduction_NOW_1/

  14. TO CONCLUDE • There is a lot going on!!!! • EU2020 strategy is crucial • Structural funds are central to it • Poverty target is central to it • So is the involvement of EAPN - please get involved!
