  1. Accelerated Reader (AR) What You Need To Know

  2. What is AR? • AR is a reading program designed to allow students to read within their comfort zone; not too easy, not too difficult in order to increase the reading grade level

  3. How do I know my reading range (ZPD)? • You will take the STAR test, which assesses vocabulary comprehension. The results will give you a book level range. You will be able to read any book within your comfort reading range. • ZP What? ZPD = Zone of Proximal Development. It’s a fancy way to say “reading range”

  4. ZPD Numbers Some kids have a high ZPD like 5.0-12.8 Some kids are pretty average like 4.7-9.6 Some kids have a lower ZPD like 3.1-4.9 Every learner is different, and that means you do not have the right to tease other students with a lower ZPD. The overall goal is for a student to be comfortable in their reading.

  5. Do I HAVE to read? Well, duh! YES! AR is part of 30% of your grade and the easiest 30% to achieve! Besides, many students who need to remain eligible for athletics and activities simply can’t afford to take risk their grade. AR also gives you the chance to read the kind of books you like to read, instead of the teacher telling you what to read. Finally, reaching your AR goals each quarter gives you a sense of accomplishment and pride.

  6. Book level & points Each book has a book level (BL) and points assigned You & your teacher will develop reasonable point goals together Use www.arbookfind.com to look up your books to determine the level and points.

  7. OK, I read…now what? • Take a test! (in the first 5 minutes of class or after school) • Log into Renaissance Learning, the AR software program USER NAME: ID # PASSWORD: last name

  8. Taking an AR Test Once you log in, the menu will take you to Accelerated Reader Click on the first choice: Take a Quiz Then click: Take a Reading Practice Quiz Then enter the name of the book, or find the quiz number through www.arbookfind.com Wait for the teacher to enter the password

  9. Sink or Swim? If you passed the test, you will receive points towards your point goal.  If you did not pass, you will not receive any points and you will be unable to retest.  Ultimately, YOU are responsible for keeping up on your reading every night in order to achieve your point goal!

  10. Read, Read, Read YOU MUST READ READ READ READ EVERY SINGLE NIGHT IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN YOUR AR GRADE.
