  1. GlueX Solenoid Recent progress and Coil cold tests Paul Brindza September 9, 2004

  2. GlueX Detector and Solenoid

  3. Solenoid showing new stand and Iron yoke fillers

  4. GlueX Solenoid- Properties • Max central field 25 KG • Length 195 Inches • Clear bore 73 Inches • Weight of yoke 226 Tons • Weight of Coils ~ 80 Tons • Max current 1800 Amps • Stored Energy 36 Mega Joules

  5. GlueX Solenoid Recent Progress • Coils #1 and # 2 are now complete! • Refurbishment activities are complete and the coils are being prepped for storage and shipment to JLAB. • Coils have been cold tested three times. • Business Preparations for Coil 3 and 4 R&R are underway, expect start after October.

  6. GlueX Solenoid Recent Progress • Major new items in coils 1 and 2 include • Six new Strain Gauges on coil supports to replace the mostly broken originals. • Eight new PT-102 Platinum Resistance Thermometers on shield to replace original Thermalcouples ( still working) • New Aluminized Mylar Multi Layer Insulation on Shields and coil of #2 cryostat

  7. New MLI Insulation on Coil #2 Helium Vessel

  8. GlueX Solenoid Recent Progress • New Internal Conflat Flange Cryogenic connections on all four coils.8 per coil. These replace the original cut and weld joining technique. • New 18 Inch vacuum bellows on coils 1,2 &4, Coil 3 TBD. Originals failed during first vacuum tests due to corrosion. • New pump out flange on Coil #4.

  9. GlueX Solenoid Recent Progress • Coil #2 Leak in Helium Vessel near seal weld found and fixed. • Coil #1 Shield leak found and fixed in supply pipe. • Coil #2 piping error found and fixed. • Two thirds of the shield in Coil #2 was isolated ie. non functional due to inlet and outlets found connected together.

  10. GlueX Solenoid Recent Progress • Coil #2 showed a 2 hour leak response during the final Helium Mass Spec. leak test indicating a possible 5 x 10 ^-8 torr-liter/sec leak in the shield. • Coil #2 pressure test at 100 PSIG OK. • Coil #1 passed its Helium Mass Spec. leak Test but failed its pressure test at ~30 PSIG! • Coil #1 new leak was traced to corrosion in a LN2 supply line. Corrosion was confirmed at ODU. • Coil #1 was repaired by replacing the pipe and retested.

  11. New LN2 connection on Coil #1Corrosion leak was near here.

  12. GlueX Solenoid Recent Progress • Due to the failure of the Coil #1 shield at low pressure during pressure testing, a decision was reached to do a cold test of coils 1 and 2 shields with LN2. • Helium Mass spec. leak tests would be performed before , while cold and after warming. • Test sequence repeated three times for each coil.

  13. GlueX Solenoid Recent Progress • Coils one and two passed all cold tests with no indication of leaks on a Helium Mass Spec. Leak detector with typical sensitivity of ~ 7 x 10^-10 torr-liter/sec! • Coils one and two passed pressure tests at 100 PSIG! • New instrumentation works Too! • This engineer sleeps thru the night again!

  14. Cold test gear and Temp. readout

  15. Robin Strain starts the LN2 Coil 2

  16. Bill Losowski and Leak Detector

  17. Lead Tech Jeff Self, Suzie and Buckwheat

  18. IUCF management nods its approval

  19. GlueX Solenoid-Conclusions • GlueX has two really good coils now! • Coils 3 and 4 rework to be complete in FY 2005. • JLAB Test Lab Space for Solenoid assembly and test secured and available for occupancy in January 2005.

  20. GlueX Solenoid-Cost and Schedule • Detailed schedule with resources to complete solenoid thru installation. • Time phased cost to complete installation in 2009 with a yearly expenditure of ~300K$! • Significant limitation is manpower availability. • Techs for solenoid assembly and test , Mechanical designer for new solenoid components. • Controls software seems OK.

  21. GlueX Solenoid – Cost summary • Cost to move from LANL 368 K$ • Cost of New DC system 132 K$ • Cost of refurbishment to date 297 K$ No JLAB salaries included so far! • Cost to complete refurbishment 1467 K$ This includes cold testing in Test Lab. • Cost to Install in Hall D 175 K$
