  1. Week 6

  2. Agenda 9/26 • Review Metabolism & Free Energy Worksheet and practice quiz – 10 min • Enzymes (slides 35-62) with virtual demos and guided notes • Homework – • 6.1 and 6.2 Guided Notes Worksheet due tomorrow • Cornell Notes Ch. 6 and self-quiz due tomorrow

  3. Enzyme Animation • http://www.lpscience.fatcow.com/jwanamaker/animations/Enzyme%20activity.html • http://www.kscience.co.uk/animations/model.swf • Setup each and then record trend: • 1) control E(5), S(20), T(40), pH(7) vol(300) • 2) increase enzyme (15) • 3) increase substrate (40) • 4) non-optimal temp (0 and 60) • 5) non-optimal pH (10) Note: this particular model uses an enzyme that favors acid pH • Then try E(10), S(60) and rest as for control – notice how rate of reaction slows

  4. In general… • More enzyme = faster reaction rate • More substrate up to a certain point = faster reaction rate • Too high/too low temp = slower reaction rate • Too high/too low pH = slower reaction rate • With inhibitors= slower reaction rate

  5. Must Know/Beautiful things about enzymes • They can be used over and over- 1000’s of substrate molecules can be changed per second… • They are very specific meaning they are an expert at only one reaction. Won’t do anything else. • They do not perform magic – they don’t change the rules of the reaction (equilibrium or delta G) – we just get there faster.

  6. Agenda 9/27 • Finish/Review Enzymes • Toothpickase Lab – I’ll walk you through first 2 counts, then you do on your own while I check notes during this • Run for a total of 4 minutes (After step 13, count for 120 more seconds) • Share data and go over discussion questions Homework- • Print out and read Lab 2 Enzyme Catalysis from website (different lab - not the one in your lab manual!) - Prelab – Identify control, independent variable etc. for part A and B and know procedure!!! Then answer questions 1-6 at end. Use this link to become familiar with setup http://www.explorebiology.com/apbiology/labs/lab08.html • Toothpickase worksheet with graph due tomorrow

  7. Agenda 9/28 • Run part A and B – do 8 minute runs instead of 5 minutes (for B – some groups start with 0.25 and some with 0.75) • Assign groups parts C,D,E or F for tomorrow • Homework – • Prelab – Identify control, independent variable etc. for part you are assigned for tomorrow and know procedure!!! Look over what other groups doing • Graph A and B on one graph together – label different lines, then answer question 7a-c

  8. Agenda 9/29 • Run parts C, D, E or F • Graph data and answer questions for your section • Homework – • Finish graphing as needed for your part • Try to answer as many of questions as you can – especially for your part and #12

  9. Agenda 9/30 • Go through Analysis Questions • Share out group data – discuss errors, etc. • Homework- • Finish worksheet for Lab 2 and Free Response questions due Monday • AP Lab 2 Report due next Wed. 10/5 • Enzyme Quiz on Monday
