What is a “Gifted/Talented” student? • No standard definition from any organization • Demonstrate outstanding levels of aptitude or competence in a domain • (<10%) (NAGC) • Higher performance capability (Javits, ‘88) • Outstanding Talent (OERI, ‘93) • Children who, by virtue of outstanding abilities, are capable of high performance.(Marland Report, ‘72)

  5. How else is it defined? • Columbus Group: asynchronous development • Gagné:Giftedness ≠Talent • Talent is hard work. Gifted is magic • Renzulli: 3 ring model • Above average ability • High level of commitment • High level of creativity

  6. Block grants based on five areas (1981) intellectual creative artistic leadership capacity specific academic fields But also (1984) mathematics, science, foreign languages, or computer learning. Early Gifted funding

  7. Gifted is not a mandated exceptionality • IDEA covers disabilities • Special ed • Local/State programs cover gifted • Special ed • Let’s see how PA covers gifted, shall we? • Gifted by state

  15. Pull out programs • Leave the inclusive classroom for enrichment • Needs to be connected to the regular classroom material to be effective

  18. Upshot? • Gifted is what you call gifted. • Teachers of the Arts will be prone to have gifted students • They get to pick us! • How can you keep them • busy? • Thinking? • Leading? • Growing? • Connected with peers?

EFE paperwork needs • Soon you may get a cooperating teacher. • Huzzah for you!!!! • Contact him/her ASAP and set up mutually agreeable times/days for your early field experience • What should you do during this EFE? • So glad you asked! • Official answer in handbook (p.35) • Unofficial answer: Whatever you can and/or they let you
