Current Situation • Jewellery making has been a vocation for centuries, skills passed on from generation to generation, with no formal and systematic training methods • On account of this as well as customers’ reluctance to pay reasonable making charges, jewellery making has remained a cottage industry • The result is appalling working conditions, outdated equipment and inefficient processes • Given all this, karigars tend to burn out early, with failing eyesight and back problems • It would be a wonder if the grand children (certainly the great grand children) of today’s karigars still find this industry attractive • In 2 generations, the talent may simply disappear • Mr Perfect is Titan’s programme to inject all forms of quality into jewellery making, to systematically change it into a manufacturing sector, but still using the craft talent that is the foundation of Indian jewellery • And ultimately make it as attractive as any other manufacturing sector for young people
