Work Experience 2011 June 27th – July 8thPurpose of work experience • Work experience is not about a job or career that you want to do when you leave school college or university • Work experience is about learning about the world of work • Promoting self confidence and communication skills • Developing employability skills • Observing people at work • Practising skills at work • Working with other adults • Working independently Working as a Team working together, achieving excellence

What kind of work experience • Retail – working in shops • Administration – office, clerical, reception • Hospitality – catering, hotels, restaurants • Leisure – sports, cinema, theatre • Media – newspapers, TV, radio, magazines • Finance – banks, building societies, insurance companies, accounts, book keeping • Medical – GP’s, hospital, • Education – playgroups, nursery, primary school, secondary school • Hair and beauty • Law – legal, solicitors working together, achieving excellence

Work experience placements • Private placement • Finding your own placement by asking employers, phoning, writing letters, e.mail, visiting and asking face to face. • You need to talk to your parents about work experience and the different employers you could ask • The employer needs to have public liability insurance for you to be able to work there working together, achieving excellence

  5. Restrictions • Some work experiences are difficult to get into due to health, safety and legal issues. • Current economic climate is also causing problems with some placements • Medical, emergency services, vetinary • TV, theatre, media, • Law • Armed forces • No overseas placements working together, achieving excellence

  6. The Work Experience Process – own placement • Find a placement • Complete the private placement form (green) • Employer must have public liability insurance • Return the form to Miss Webster • ‘WEX on line’ will carry out the H and S check • H and S checked and approved you will be able to go on that placement • Only if the H and S check is approved can you go on the placement working together, achieving excellence

  7. The Work Experience Process-W ex on line Data base • You will be given an ID • Log on to the data base search through the system • Find four placements that you are interested in and can travel to • Print off the four placements • Parents need to sign the forms • Return to Miss Webster • W ex will carry out the H and S checks working together, achieving excellence

  8. Time scale Autumn Term - All deadlines must be met • Parents signature on all forms • Own placement forms and W ex. On line placement Forms to be completed and handed in to Miss Webster by Friday Dec 10th Spring term • W Ex. Will carry out H and S checks Summer Term – • Confirmation of placements • Going out on Work experience • Return to school – Work Experience Debrief working together, achieving excellence

  9. Parents • Please help with finding placements • Discuss the work experience process • Ensure all paperwork is signed • Deadlines are met for paperwork and interviews • Communicate with us issues or concerns as soon as you can working together, achieving excellence

  10. Costs • For most pupils work experience placements in Hampshire has no cost implication • However costs of £50.00 are incurred and must be paid for in advance If • Out of area placement working together, achieving excellence

  11. Problems • H and S procedures not sufficiently rigorous Placements fall through • Public liability insurance not up to date • Employers change their minds • Employers change roles within a company • Company undergoes changes • Economic climate working together, achieving excellence

  12. And finally • Try and find a placement you will enjoy • Meet the deadlines with all the paperwork • Act quickly when you get messages • Be resilient if things do not go to plan • Arrange interviews as soon as you get the paperwork (March / April) • Confirm your attendance two weeks before your placement (mid June) working together, achieving excellence
