  2. Early Life • Born in Connecticut in 1977 • He has the year 77 tattooed on his chest • Full name is John Clayton Mayer • Grew up with both parents and an older brother • He is half Jewish (from his mother’s side)

  3. Musical Beginnings • John started playing guitar when he was 13 • Soon after, his neighbor gave him a Stevie Ray Vaughn tape • With his new love of the blues, and a lot of practice, John began playing at local shops and clubs while in high school

  4. Education • John never really enjoyed school, especially high school • This is later captured in his first single “No Such Thing” • After 2 semesters at Berklee School of Music, John dropped out and moved to Atlanta, Georgia

  5. Pre-Label Career • John and Clay Cook (his college friend that convinced him to drop out) started a two-man band called Lo-Fi Masters • Lo-Fi Masters played in the local circuit in Atlanta, but split after about a year because John wanted more pop music • John recorded and released his first independent album Inside Wants Out • This album featured songs that he co-wrote with Cook such as “No Such Thing” and a self written single “Why Georgia”

  6. Getting A Record Deal • With the help of his album, John started playing bigger shows around the South and Midwest • He was discovered at the South by Southwest tour and signed to “starter label” Aware Records • Soon after being signed to his first label, Aware signed a contract with major label Columbia Records that gave Columbia first dibs on all their artists • Only about a year after SXSW, Mayer was signed to one of the biggest record labels in America

  7. Stage 1: Acoustic/Pop • With his new label, John re-released Inside Wants Out, and then started working on his next albums: Room For Squares and Heavier Things • He performed at the legendary Red Rock Amphitheatre in Colorado, and released an online live album from that performance called Any Given Thursday • These releases won John numerous awards such as a Grammy for Best Pop Song with “Your Body Is A Wonderland”

  8. Stage 2: Blues/Rock • After producing a trio of acoustic and very pop influenced albums, John took a break from his solo career • Mayer went back to his love of the blues and rock music, and started the John Mayer Trio with bassist PinoPalladinoand drummer Steve Jordan • The Trio never had anything come out of the studio, but they did release a live album Try! • Unlike his previous albums,Try! featured a lot of guitar distortion and solos and had hits such as “Good Love Is On The Way” and “Who Did You Think I Was”

  9. Stage 3: Rock/Pop • After the unofficial breakup of the Trio, John went back to his solo career and into the studio • What came out was his 4th studio album Continuum • John himself has said that this is his best album • It features hits such as “Waiting On The World To Change” and “Gravity” • In 2008, John released a live CD/DVD from a concert in LA that included an acoustic performance, a Trio set, and a full band set with songs mostly from Continuum

  10. Back To His Roots • With his latest release, Battle Studies, John went back to his acoustic, singer/songwriter style • Battle Studies is known as a “house record” because John, Pino, and Steve moved into a house in LA and wrote, recorded, and produced almost every song on the record from that house • Battle Studies includes the singles “Half Of My Heart” and “Heartbreak Warfare”

  11. Discography and Awards • as/is • Any Given Thursday • Try! • Where The Light Is • Inside Wants Out • Room For Squares • Heavier Things • Continuum • Battle Studies So far, John has been nominated for 15 Grammy’s, and has won seven.
