  1. Monday, 21 October 2013 Maria and Father Learning objectives: Starter Write the date, title and learning objectives into your book. Read the extract from chapter 6. It is on your table. What does the extract tell you about Maria and Bruno’s father? Jot ideas down into your book until each person has finished reading. What kind of people are they? How do they feel about the house and why? What is their relationship with Bruno like? • To identify aspects of Maria’s and Bruno’s father’s character. • To use discussion skills to understand more about the characters. Register Challenge Tell me a word or phrase that describes what kind of person you are.

  2. Monday, 21 October 2013 Maria and Father Learning objectives: All:Will be able to identify some aspects of Maria’s and Bruno’s character. Most:Should be able to find evidence in the extract that proves your point – and use this in a PEE paragraph. Some:should be able to LINK the explanation to further explanation or analysis – and give detail about WHY the character is the way he or she is. OR …write 2 PEE paragraphs about a character. • To identify aspects of Maria’s and Bruno’s father’s character. • To use discussion skills to understand more about the characters.

  3. Do the extracts tell you anything..? What is our learning objective? To identify aspects of Maria’s and Bruno’s father’s character. To use discussion skills to understand more about the characters. Character??? Discussion skills?????

  4. In your groups... • Share your ideas about Maria and Bruno’s father. • Use the text to support your comments. For example: Point: Maria is frightened of Bruno’s father. Evidence: After Bruno insulted his father, Maria “looked around to make sure that no one was listening to them”, and told Bruno not to say such things. Explanation (Analysis): This shows that Maria worries that someone may have heard what they were saying and she is afraid of what could happen if they did.

  5. If you can… • Exctend your answer and explain the big WHY… For example: Point: Maria is frightened of Bruno’s father. Evidence: After Bruno insulted his father, Maria “looked around to make sure that no one was listening to them”, and told Bruno not to say such things. Explanation (Analysis): This shows that Maria worries that someone may have heard what they were saying and she is afraid of what could happen if they did. Link (Extension or further analysis…say WHY, WHY WHY): They could both be punished; she could blamed for the discussion and be sent away by Bruno’s father and treated horribly, like the people on the other side of the fence at ‘Out-With’, for speaking badly about Bruno’s father. Bruno could be punished seriously also. For no one criticises Bruno’s father. He is the head of ‘Out-With’, he is a powerful man and he makes everyone do exactly what he wants. Maria is afraid that she will get into very serious trouble for allowing Bruno to speak badly of his father.

  6. All about perspective... • But, it might suggest she is angry at Bruno for saying such disrespectful things. • But, this could mean Maria wants to leave Out-With and join the circus! • But, it might suggest that she is truly loyal to Bruno’s father. • But, it might suggest that she simply believes that children should respect their elders. Bruno was rude and should be told it is not acceptable. SENSIBLE SUGGESTIONS Tell me what you are going to do!

  9. We are going to have a debate... I am going to show you some statements. In your groups you are challenged to either support or argue against that statement. I will also select 2 people to judge your debate –they must write down the main points of your argument and select a winner.

  10. Can you argue..? • Maria’s just getting involved in things that aren’t her business, she should keep her nose out! • Maria is a good maid. She takes care of the children and looks after the house. • Maria is a kind person; she only tries to comfort Bruno because he is feeling sad. • Father loves Bruno and Gretel. They have to be more grown up and understand that father’s job is very important. • Father is a nasty man. He only cares about his job and what the Fury thinks! • Father is great at his job and it’s about time someone like him got things organised around here!

  11. How to debate… Some sentence stems for expressing your opinion: • It is my view that… • Even though I see your point, I have to disagree because… • Another way of looking at it would be… • Evidence from the text suggests that… • That is only one way of looking at the issue, as I believe… • We need to be careful to balance the evidence, which I think suggests… • I respect your view, but I think… • I would like to suggest that the writer… Points to raise in the debate: 1. 2. 3.

  12. Debating Tips • Use logic. • Listen carefully to the views of others. • Make good eye contact and don’t interrupt. • If you shout, you’ve lost both your temper and the debate! • Stay logical and don’t get hot under the collar!
