  1. Week 2 Warm Ups Advanced Algebra

  2. Warm Up 8/18/14 Simplify each expression. 1. 2. 3. 4. Find the mean and median. 5. 1, 2, 87 6. 3, 2, 1, 10

  3. Warm Up 8/19/14 • You are at a store and want to purchase an accurate room thermometer. One says 73o, six say 75o, eight say 76o, and one says 37o. What are the measures of central tendency? • Find the five number summary and make a box-and-whisker plot for the data in problem #1.

  4. Warm Up 8/20/14 • Two students attempt to find the standard deviation of 4, 6, 8, and 10. Which is incorrect? Explain the error. 2. The number of electoral votes for the western states were 11, 7, 4, 3, 3, 55, 4, 5, 9, 10, and 5. Prove mathematically that 55 is an outlier and explain its effect on the mean and standard deviation.

  5. Warm Up 8/21/14 • For the data set, explain the effect of the outlier(s) on the mean and standard deviaton: 14, 13, 16, 9, 3, 7, 11, 12, 11, 4 • Find the variance and standard deviation for the data: 0, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 100

  6. Warm Up 8/22/14 • Use the data set to find the five number summary and to make a box and whisker plot. Also find the interquartile range. 9, 4, 7, 8, 5, 8, 24, 5 2. Decide which method is the survey, the experiment, and the observation. Which is the most reliable?
