What is Feudalism? • Feudalism was the political and economic system created in Europe after the fall of Rome based on land control. • Feudalism was established by William the Conqueror to reward the his Norman supporters for their help in the conquest of England. • A lord (landowner) gives fiefs (land grants) in exchange for services.   3. Feudalism Bring Social Order • Feudalism had a large effect on Europe during the Middle Ages and classified the people social groups using a strict pecking order. The social classes were usually inherited. • The Feudal System created a pyramid of power with the king at the top. The kings are served by nobles who are served by knights and the peasants (serfs) are at the bottom. • The knights were horseman who defended their lord’s land in exchange for fiefs. • A majority of the people were serfs. They were lawfully bound their place of birth and while they were not slaves whatever they produce belongs to their lord. What is Manorialism? • Manorialism or the manorial system, is the political, economic,and social system by which peasants of medieval Europe were dependent on their land and on their lord. • Its basic unit was the manor, a self sufficient estate or fief that was under the control of a lord who enjoyed a variety of rights over it and the peasants attached to it by means of serfdom. • Serfdom was the enforced labor of serfs on the field of landowners, in return for protection and the right to work on their leased fields. • Under Manorialism, labor provided protection and land and the peasants and nobles of the manor worked through mutualism.   5. Feudalism in the Canterbury Tales • Feudalism was seen in many aspects of the Canterbury Tales.
