  7. The World for Girls Today • 45% of girls think it is more difficult for girls to reach their full potential than it is for boys • Six in ten girls stop doing what they love because they don’t like how they look • Six in ten women will experience violence in their life time

  8. Opportunity There are around 870 million girls aged 5-19 in the world, but only approximately 1% are current members 99% potential to grow! In order to do this, we need a clear plan to set out why and how we propose to do this

  12. I. Membership basics 145 Member Organisations – including Full and Associate Members Regional split: 31 Africa, 14 Arab, 25 Asia Pacific, 39 Europe and 36 Western Hemisphere

  13. Membership globally ~ 8.2 million members (2009 census)

Key Objectives A global strategy focusing on both quantity and quality of membership: Recruitment: we cannot grow without quality Retention: we cannot sustain our growth without quality Quality is a key for both attracting more girls, and with greater diversity, (recruitment) and keeping the members (retention).

Three main strands Building the capacity of existing MOs through the regional structure, including the advancement of volunteerism Delivered mainly through Regional Membership Development Strategies 2) Pathways to organizational membership 3) New pathways of membership for girls and young women

Strand 1 Aims Grow and sustain strong Member Organizations (MOs) that are focused to achieve WAGGGS’ mission, relevant, flexible, values-based and run by high quality leaders Ensure that WAGGGS is the organization of choice for girls and young women, supporters, volunteers, partners, and donors Objective Grow membership to 12 million by 2020

Strand 2 Aims Review existing pathways to organizational membership in order to understand what barriers exist so that new organizational models can be explored that have the potential to grow membership Increase the number of Associate or Full MOs from 145 to 154 by 2020 through learning from the review of pathways to organizational membership Objective Increase the number of MOs from 145 to 154 by 2020

Strand 3 Aims Explore whether new pathways to membership would bring WAGGGS closer to achieving its vision of reaching 100% of girls and young women worldwide Research whether the current membership model is a reason that WAGGGS is not reaching 100% of girls and young women Objective If the research indicates the need, introduce ideas for new pathways to membership at the 2014 World Conference

  26. Resourcing the Movement – Quota review • Membership fee – not a quota • Adjustments proposed to current methodology • More wealth bands means a smaller jump for MOs moving up a band • Further work to do to look at the income based model widely used by other INGOs
