This overview examines Egypt's path to independence leading up to the rise of Nasser. From being a British protectorate during World War I, through the emergence of the Wafd party and the nationalistic Muslim Brotherhood, to the eventual declaration of independence in 1945, Egypt's struggle for self-determination was fraught with challenges. The social and economic conditions, along with the frustrations of the Free Officers Movement, contributed to a revolutionary climate in which Nasser would later thrive, advocating for an end to colonialism, social equality, and the establishment of a strong state.
