ASSESSMENT • Assessment is done in two ways: • Controlled assessment (in class) for Speaking (2 recordings of 10 minutes) and Writing (2 essays of 150 words): 6 hours of preparation with your teacher in class before the controlled assessment. • End of year exam for Reading and Listening (with possibility to retake the exams the following year)

  4. THE COURSE • Description of course: • Study of 4 themes over two years: • Lifestyle (health and relationships), • Leisure (free time and holidays), • Work /Education (Schools, Career choices) • Home/ Environment (local area and wider environment).

  5. INTERNATIONAL LINKS AND ICT • Etwinning projects with France, Spain • Connecting classrooms Project with Colombia • Access to a personal netbook

  6. WHY I WANT TO CHOOSE GCSE LANGUAGES (QUOTES FROM Y8 AND 9) • Employability • Open a shop and/or a business in Europe and further afield • Travelling purposes • Work experience, University Gap Year • Advantage on other British people on the job market • Meet new people

  7. IDEAS OF JOBS • Travel and tourism: Travel agent, Tourist guide, Olympic Games 2012 volunteer... • Public services and Central government: ministry of defence, foreign office, MI6 and MI 5... • Creative and media industry: sports journalist, editors, brand managers, advertising executives, sound engineer... • Business: “If I’m selling to you, I speak your language.  If I’m buying, tienesquehablar mi idioma!”, Personal assistant, Multilingual secretary, business owner or manager, trader... • Catering: chef, waiter, maitre d’, hotel manager, receptionist... • Voluntary sector: The Red Cross, Doctors without borders, Oxfam,.../ gap year opportunities • Teaching and translating: translator for UK businesses, Interpreter for foreign businessmen, sportspeople.. Language teaching in the UK or abroad • Law : British and European Lawyer, advisor at the EU in Brussels or Strasbourg.

  8. AND AFTER GCSE? • After a GCSE in Languages, • you can go on to AS and A-levels • start studying another languages to broaden your field of experience. • Complete a vocational unit like Languages for Tourism or Business
