Focus of the DLI • Make Europe's rich and diverse cultural and scientific heritage easier and more interesting to use online • for work, leisure and/or study • books, films, maps, photographs, music, etc • Combine multicultural and multilingual environments with technological advances and new business models • Two strands: • Cultural heritage: • build a common European Digital Library • multilingual internet access point to cultural collections from all Member States • Scientific heritage: • ensure current and future access for research and innovation purposes .

Europeana.net www.europeana.eu/ • Thematic Network funded under eContentplus programme • 2-year project began in July 2007 (‘EDLNet’) • 90 representatives of heritage/knowledge organisations/ IT experts throughout Europe • Builds on TEL project management, technical expertise • Core team based in the national library of the Netherlands • EDL Foundation oversees the project

The roadmap to a European Digital Library • End of 2006: full collaboration among EU National Libraries • From 2007 collaboration to be expanded to Archives, Museums and Audiovisual Archives • November 2007: EDL Foundation in place • major European associations of archives, audiovisual archives, museums and libraries as founders • 2,000,000 books, films, photographs, manuscripts, and other cultural works accessible by 2008 • At least 6,000,000 works by 2010

EDLocal • Best Practice Network • Three years (starts 1 June) • Improve interoperability of digital content held by regional and local museums, libraries and archives • Over 20 million items identified as available initially • Europe wide network of regional repositories/ aggregations • Integrated Europeana prototype service including EDLocal content • Development of thematic areas

Why should we do this? • Make local content available for harvesting through Europeana service • Make Europeana-branded content available to other service providers • tourism • education • family history • humanities research • publishing/media industries • through other search engines (e.g. Google) and services on the web

Standards, tools and infrastructure • Establish easy processes for making content available • Implement Europeana specifications and tools • Harvesting metadata into Europeana index • OAI-PMH repositories and Europeana Metadata Application Profiles • OAI-PMH = Open Archiving Initiative – Protocol for Metadata Harvesting • And then….. • Object Modeling, Authorisation, Usage Logging, Accounting, Payment, Legal and Access Protection Issues (IPR / Rights / DRM), Advanced Semantic Interoperability, Name Authority Services,Multilingualism of Content, Preservation etc

  18. Types of content • Items and collections of high cultural value (‘treasures’) held at local or regional level • Specific local collections held by libraries, museums and archives, local sound and film archives • Public records held by archives etc.

Partner roles • Co-ordinating partners from 27 countries • Work with technical partners to implement infrastructure and standards • install OAI-PMH repositories (Fedora, DSpace, Greenstone etc usually Open Source) • automated metadata conversion • convert vocabularies • Negotiate sensible aggregation arrangements • (e.g. with national libraries or cultural portals) • Promote digitisation at local/regional level • Hold a national meeting

  21. Funding for new countries to join Europeana? • eContentplus • What is Europe? • EU will use digital content if it is there, but won’t pay (yet) • CH Research programme • Any country with EU research agreement • National funding • Third party funding

What might be done? • Become interoperable with Europeana • Adopt the EDL infrastructure • OAI-PMH repositories • Europeana metadata application profile • Decide on a sensible level of aggregation • Digitise • Set up a centre of competence on digitisation • Train people • Establish some priorities for digitisation • Work ‘cross domain’ • that is: work with archives, audio-visual archives, museums • Regional initiative? • national funding?
