William, born in Falaise, Normandy, became Duke at age seven after his father's death. In 1066, he led the Battle of Hastings, claiming control of England and declaring himself its king, marking a significant shift in English history. Notably, he constructed Dover Castle, among the earliest fortifications post-conquest. William had nine children with his wife Matilda and divided his lands between his sons upon his death: Robert received Normandy and William II became King of England.
