  1. Efficient Ways to Ensure Your Laboratory’s Safety Safety is the primary priority when working in a laboratory. Hence, it makes sense to have a set of laboratory safety procedures for everyone to follow, as well as to develop best practices and conduct effective training and safety audits. Ensuring your laboratory’s safety is a step to proper laboratory risk management, or you risk encountering issues such as accidents and contamination in the absence of safety precautions. Hence, here are some efficient ways to make sure that your lab is safe: Do not bring any food or beverage inside the lab – Unless you are testing or experimenting on them for work, anything edible must be kept outside the laboratory to reduce distraction and avoid contamination. Encourage working with a buddy or in a team – Some experiments may be best done alone, but if and when possible, encourage your staff to work with a partner or in a small group. That way, they can look out for one another and prevent human error in a more efficient way. Label items properly – Part of good and efficient laboratory risk management is labeling items properly and making sure that their labels are easy to read and highly visible. Mark solutions and chemicals following OSHA guidelines. Make sure trip hazard, high-noise areas, breakers, and other hazardous objects in your lab are clearly marked, too. Invest in the right safety equipment –If you value your staff and everyone’s safety, never compromise on safety equipment. Create a reasonable budget for high-quality protective equipment and gear, such as gloves, eye wash solutions and stations, goggles, ear plugs, safety glasses, lab coats, splash guards, and fire extinguishers. Be sure to keep them highly maintained, too, and be mindful of things that can expire, such as fire extinguishers and certain types of cleaners.

  2. Keep flammable chemicals in fireproof storage facilities – Flammable aerosols, solvents, and chemicals must be stored in fireproof cabinets when not in Conduct safety inspections – Whether announced or surprise, safety inspections will ensure that your lab is safe and hat and its inhabitants are observing safety procedures. Consult with experts – Find a reputable team of safety professionals, scientists, project managers, and engineers who bear advanced degrees in biological sciences, and professional certifications in microbiology, security, and biological safety. These experts can provide consultation and guidance when you need help in assessing your existing laboratory safety procedures and programs. They can provide laboratory risk assessment, too. use.
