Throughout history, many cultures have imposed radical practices on women’s bodies, often under the guise of tradition or religion. From Chinese foot binding lasting over a millennium to corsets restricting waists at a young age, these practices illustrate the extreme lengths societies go to control women. Other examples include the Padaung tribe's neck rings and Mauritania's wife-fattening farms. The underlying belief system often views women's bodies as inadequate and in need of alteration, highlighting a troubling intersection of culture and female agency.

Corsets • Girls started atage 14 tighteninguntil waist was18-19 inches
Padaung tribe of Burma • Rings stretch out the neck;without the rings, theneck would break orwoman would suffocate
Why? • Beliefs that women’s bodies are- not adequate and need to be “fixed”- threatening and must be “controlled” - not sexy enough and need to be “enhanced.” • Culture intervenes to “solve” the problem.
