  1. Careers in Nuclear Science and Technology North American Young Generation in Nuclear Learning Fest at Troy State University - Nicole Faulk and April Gulley

  2. Nuclear Science and Technology Benefits and Information • There are 103 commercial nuclear power plants producing electricity in the United States. • Worldwide, 31 countries are operating 431 nuclear plants for electricity generation. In 10 countries, 29 new nuclear plants are under construction. • Today, nuclear power plants are second largest source of electricity in the United States, supplying 20% of the nations electricity each year. • The average electricity production cost in 1999 for nuclear energy was $1.83 per kW-hour, for coal fired plants $2.07, for oil $3.24, and for gas $3.52.

  3. Nuclear Science and Technology Benefits and Information • Lowest impact on the environment of all energy sources • Emission Free • Ranked among the safest places to work • More than 28, 000 American doctors practice medical specialties that use radiation. • Irradiation kills bacteria, parasites and insects in food - including listeria, salmonella and potentially deadly E. coli - retards non-microbial spoilage of certain foods, increasing their shelf life.

  4. Nuclear Science and Technology Benefits and Information • Radiation is also used in various industrial applications including: • Sterilize baby powder, bandages, contact lens solution and many cosmetics. • The automobile industry uses radioactive materials to test the quality of steel in cars and to prevents the plastic of your car dash from cracking. • Aircraft manufactures use radiation to check for flaws in jet engines.
