  3. THE PROJECT • Select six myths about HIV/AIDS and where possible use events from the novel to distinguish between myths and facts about HIV/AIDS. Use resources from the Internet and present the project in the form of a PowerPoint presentation.

  4. Myth #1 "I don't have to worry about AIDS because I'm not gay." • Fact • Heterosexual intercourse is the primary mode of (HIV) transmission worldwide. • Source • UNAIDS

  5. The novel • None of the characters in the novel with HIV/AIDS were said to be gay

  6. Myth #2 You can tell if someone has HIV by looking at them." • Fact • A person can be HIV-positive and not show any symptoms for many years. • Source • LIAAC

  7. Myth # 3 "Shooting up is the only way drugs lead to AIDS." • Fact: • While sharing needles remains one of the surest ways to get HIV, any drug use can put you at risk for the virus by altering your behavior and allowing you to do things you normally wouldn't. Remember, steroids, pot (marijuana), crack and alcohol all fall under this category. • Source • LIAAC

  8. From the novel • None of the characters in the novel with HIV/AIDS were said to be involved in drug use or abuse.

  9. Myth # 4 "You can't get AIDS from oral sex." • Fact • HIV is transmitted through all forms of unprotected sex, including oral, vaginal and anal. And it doesn't matter whether the sexual act is being performed by a man or a woman. • Source • LIAAC

  10. The novel • The book is intended for children and therefore does not get into details about sex. In fact the author uses euphemisms to refer to sex. One example of a euphemism used is “Men will give you money sometimes if you are nice to them”

  11. Myth #5: You can get HIV/AIDS from touching • Fact • You cannot get HIV/AIDS from touching

  12. The novel • Uncle Wysom and his family believed that you can HIV/AIDS from touching as a result they avoided touching Binti and Julie.

  13. Myth # 6 : You can get HIV/AIDS by using personal articles of a victim • Fact: • You cannot get HIV/AIDS by using personal articles of a victim. • Source • Farm Radio

  14. The novel • Uncle Wysom and his family believed that you can HIV/AIDS from using personal articles of a victim. As a result they gave Junie and Binti separate plates and utensils to use and did not want them to assist in food preparation. However, they did not seem to have a problem using their clothes.
