  2. Because food, clothing, weapons & other supplies were needed for the war, businesses made money again. Texas produced airplanes & warships as well as the oil that fueled them. WWII ended the Great Depression. WWII Ends the Great Depression
  3. With the rapid growth of Texas industries during WWII, Texas was able to pay its $42 million debt from the Great Depression. Texas Prospers
  4. African Americans & Mexican Americans fought for the U.S. in WWII. Once they returned home, they fought for the equal rights they felt they earned. Equal Rights
  5. In 1948, the GI Forum was founded by Dr. Hector Garcia to help Mexican American veterans to obtain an education, health care& low-cost home loans. GI Forum
  6. In 1948, the GI Forum & the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) won a federal case ending segregation of Hispanic children in schools. LULAC
  7. U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which made it illegal for restaurants, hospitals & other public places to discriminate against people based on their race. Lyndon B. Johnson
  8. In the 1960s, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) space program made Houston, Texas its home & provided thousands of jobs. In 1969, NASA guided the Apollo 11 astronauts to land on the moon. NASA
  9. Evangelical: The teaching of the Christian religion. In the late 1970s & 1980s, the Evangelical Movement saw religious leaders becoming involved in politics. The Republican Party was supported by Evangelical voters. Evangelical Movement
  10. Real Estate: The buying & selling of land and homes 1970s: When unemployment was low, real estate was in demand & building expanded. 1980s: Demand decreased due to an energy crisis 1990s: Economy improved & so did demand Real Estate
