  4. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Just as we have TCP/IP as a common protocol for Internet communication, there are common protocols to handlee-mail called: POP3Post Office Protocol SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol IMAP Internet Message Access Protocol MIME*Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions

  5. EDC 601Instructional Technologies IMAP vs. POP3 IMAP's ability to access messages (both new and saved) from more than one computer has become extremely important as reliance on electronic messaging and use of multiple computers increase, but this functionality cannot be taken for granted: the widely used Post Office Protocol (POP) works best when one has only a single computer, since it was designed to support "offline" message access, wherein messages are downloaded and then deleted from the mail server. This mode of access is not compatible with access from multiple computers since it tends to sprinkle messages across all of the computers used for mail access. Thus, unless all of those machines share a common file system, the offline mode of access that POP was designed to support effectively ties the user to one computer for message storage and manipulation.

  7. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Which selection should we make - IMAP, POP3 (leave), or POP3 (don't leave)?

  12. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Web Interfaces

  13. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Note: The site to which we connect does NOT have to be the site from which we get our e-mail! For example, I use Time-Warner Road Runner and check my e-mail at Buffalo State or I could use my LAN connection at Buffalo State and check my e-mail at profsvet.com. It all depends on how you configure your e-mail!

  14. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Discussion Groups (interest groups, listservs, mailing lists)

  15. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Discussion groups can be classified into for basic types: • Open • Moderated– messages are reviewed before posting • Announcement–subscribers can only receive messages • Digest–all messages included as text in one message

  16. EDC 601Instructional Technologies What software is needed to participant in a discussion group?

  17. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Software e-mail (client) List server (server) Listserv Listproc Mailbase Mailserv Majordomo

  19. EDC 601Instructional Technologies How do I communicate with a discussion group?

  20. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Usually there are two e-mail addresses associated with a discussion group: the server with which you conduct business - subscribe/unsubscribe, list subscribers, etc. the list to which you send and receive group messages Note: you can also send an individual message to a group member.

  21. EDC 601Instructional Technologies How do I find appropriate discussion groups?

  22. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Web-basedSearch Engines www.lsoft.com/lists/listref.html tile.net

  23. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Now let's see if we can find and subscribe to a discussion group.

  24. EDC 601Instructional Technologies GROUPS (Usenet, Netnews, News)

  25. EDC 601Instructional Technologies What is a Newsgroup? Like mailing lists, Newsgroups are another way to share information among Internet users via e-mail.

  26. EDC 601Instructional Technologies general specific Newsgroups cover a wide variety of subjects which are divided into hierarchies k12.ed.soc-studies.ww1

  27. EDC 601Instructional Technologies TOP EIGHT PREFIXES alt => alternative comp => computers k12 => education soc => social news => network news rec => recreation sci => science talk => idle conversation

  28. EDC 601Instructional Technologies However, messages posted to a newsgroup will be sent to a news server where you can access them at will. In a discussion group, messages sent to the group will be sent to all members of that group.

  29. EDC 601Instructional Technologies What is a news server?

  30. EDC 601Instructional Technologies A place where newsgroups AND their messages are kept. There are over 100,000 newsgroups world wide. Therefore, instead of being on one giant computer, the Newsgroups are distributed to many news servers.

  35. EDC 601Instructional Technologies News Servers ISP's OSP's Institutions

  36. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Buffalo State Our Class Be Aware, Some organizations do NOT support Newsgroups! Well, actually Buffalo State does. However it only supports a few limited ones, AND you must be using a campus computer.

  37. EDC 601Instructional Technologies How do I communicate with a news server?

  38. EDC 601Instructional Technologies As we have seen with other Internet components, there are protocols (http, smtp, pop3, etc.) that are required in order to communicate between the server and the client. For newsgroups, the NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) is used.

  39. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Software News reader (client) Agent 3.1 TIN 1.6.2 Outlook Express News server (server)

  40. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Public Newsgroup Sites news://msnews.microsoft.com http://groups.google.com http://www.teranews.com

  41. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Now let’s see how to add a newsgroup and read messages

  42. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Forums/Bulletin Boards

  43. EDC 601Instructional Technologies Like Newsgroups, forums and bulletin boards are “active” ways to share information among Internet users, but these newer methods use your browser.

  44. EDC 601Instructional Technologies How do I find forums and bulletin boards?

  45. EDC 601Instructional Technologies The following are a couple of forum directories: www.forumvirus.com www.forumfox.com You can also use an Internet search engine such as Google to find a forum/bulletin board. For example: “jeep forum” or “jeep bulletin board”

  46. EDC 601Instructional Technologies text (typed) audio (spoken) We have already examined e-mail, so now consider the following Internet communications continuum. video (seen) e-mail video conference computer- computer computer- phone chat rooms instant messaging phone-computer-phone (VoIP – Voice over IP)

  47. EDC 601Instructional Technologies We will examine some of these topics (audio, and video) again when we discuss adding multimedia elements to Web pages. For now our discussion will center on these in terms of personal communication.

  48. EDC 601Instructional Technologies You can join a chat room www.mirc.com/irc.html

  49. EDC 601Instructional Technologies You can send/receivemessages. www.icq.com

  50. EDC 601Instructional Technologies You can have a conversation http://www.vonage.com www.dialpad.com
