  1. What is Service Learning? • StFX Service Learning is considered the pioneer for Service Learning in Canada. • Service Learning is an innovative way to integrate experiential learning, academic study, and community service.

  2. Immersion Service Learning (ISL) • Students travel in groups to diverse communities in Canada and abroad. • While being immersed in the local culture, students: • provide service with community organizations, • visit sites of historic and political importance, and • participate in education sessions led by local community leaders.

  3. 2013-2014 Immersion Experiences • Immersion • experiences • are open to all StFX • students regardless of year of study or • discipline. • Belize • Cuba • Grenada • Guatemala • L’Arche Ottawa

  4. Travel Dates • Most travel takes place during the February Break – Friday, February 20th to Sunday, March 1st , 2015. • The Belize group travels April 23rd through May6th, 2015 (Please note that travel occurs over convocation weekend).

Belize - April 23rd to May 6th Leader: Joanne Tompkins (Education) Host: Belize Zoo/Tropical Education Center & Maya Center Focus: A strong focus on the Mayan Culture Service Placements: Local school, assist a local herbalist, partner with a community organization, Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center

Cuba - February 21st to March 1st Leader: Jonathan Rosborough (Economics) Host: University of Cienfuegos Focus: Sustainable development issues, food production, alternative medicines and environmental protection Service Placements: Agriculture Sector: organic farms, collective farms, organiponicos

  7. Grenada - February 21st to March 1st Lead Rachel Hurst (Womens and Gender Studies) Host: Maureen St. Clair, Harford Village Focus: Introduces participants to rural Grenada and economic, social and cultural life of this tiny Caribbean island Service Placements: Pre-primary, primary and high schools, special education

  8. Guatemala - February 20th to March 1st Leader: Clare Fawcett (Anthropology) Host: Jackie McVicar, Breaking the Silence Focus: Community development, peace building after years of civil war, Fair Trade coffee, human rights, and the Mayan culture Service Placements: Small rural coffee farms, school project

  9. L’Arche Ottawa February 22nd to March 1st Leader: Greg Carter (Music) Host: L’Arche Ottawa Focus: Living and working with adults who have developmental disabilities and those who wish to share life with them Service Placements: Living and assisting in L’Arche homes in Ottawa

  10. Service Learning staff, hosts and faculty leaders assist participants: prepare for the experience, observe and reflect throughout the experience, and reflect and debrief following the experience. Service Learning Staff, Hosts, Faculty Leaders

  11. IDS 305: Immersion Service Learning • Participants may choose a credit or non-credit option. You are not required to register in a course. • IDS 305 is a 3-credit course offered in the winter term. This course engages the student in a major research project on a topic related to their immersion experience. • DEVS 311 and BIOL 391 also have ISL academic assignments.

  12. Fees, Bursaries, & Fundraising Bursaries are available! You must complete and submit a Bursary Application; bursaries up to $1,250 are awarded based on financial need. Bursary Workshop: Wed, Oct 8, 5:15pm Coady 242 Deadline: 4pm, Friday, October 17th. BELIZE - $TBA CUBA - $TBA GRENADA - $TBA GUATEMALA - $TBA L’ARCHE OTTAWA - $TBA Participants often fundraise all or most of the fees, fundraising may be done individually, in groups, or both.

Getting Involved IMMERSION INFORMATION SESSION Tuesday, Oct 7th 6:30 pm Schwartz Auditorium Everyone is Welcome! • Visit the Immersion Service Learning website for information and application documents. • Complete and submit the ON-LINE APPLICATION FORM along with supporting documentation on or before the application deadline: 4pm, Thursday,Oct. 23rd, 2014. • Don’t forget to apply for a Bursary!!!
