APT Strategic Plan for 2006 - 2009 Focus Areas • Sustainable Development and the environment (including cold recycling) • To include alternative materials (RAP), warm mix technology, construction processes & quality of construction and sustainability (APT SCom Feb 08) • Labour-intensive construction • Asphalt performance • Vehicle-pavement interaction (VPI) • Provision of low volume roads • Concrete pavements • Structural Pavement Design Method

  3. HVS programme: recent and current projects • Guidelines for bitumen stabilization– completion date August 2008 • HMA HVS and Lab testing Standard mix – completed March 2008 Rut-resistant mix – started April 2008

  4. HVS programme: recent and current projects (cont) • Thin CR concrete pavement– completion date May 2008 (SANRAL) • SIM testing: HVS & MMLS - completed • Job creation, skills development and empowerment in Road Construction – completion date April 2008

  5. HVS programme: recent and current projects (cont) • LTPP monitoring: 2388, P243/1, N7, MR538 - ongoing • Instrumentation for HVS (PSPA) – completed

Future Projects • Rut resistant mixes • First mix constructed early March 2008, HVS testing started April 2008 • Second mix – constructed in May, HVS testing in June 2008 • HiMA • Sabita funded • Technology Transfer project • Design in progress • Construction after May 2008 • Thin concrete pavements for low volume roads • Construction of test sections – May 2008 • Testing – end May

  7. Pavement Engineering Course • Postponed until January 2009 • Accreditation issues • HEQF meeting 1 April • Restructuring qualification for Technicians, Technologists & Engineers • 3 streams • B Tech will probably fall away with time • Course run in association with TUT • Framework for duplication at other Univ of Tech • Certificate in Pavement Engineering with credits for higher degree
